The foliage map is a color map that specifies what foliage grows where on the terrain..

In the .trn file there is a section which specifies the color index in the color pallette of the image and the foliage items from the items.def file that goes with it..

Think of the foliage map as an overlay that goes on top of the terrain.. each color in the foliage map represents a different peice of foliage.

By painting a flat area a given color and then assigning a tall grass to that color in the TRN file.. you can make a meadow for instance..

To see what I mean about the colors in the pallete .. the best thing is to unpack a Nova terrain that has foliage.. then open the foliage map (as specified in the TRN file) probably terrainname_f.tga ..

anyhow.. find it .. unpack it and open it.. use photoshop or gimp or some similiar tool.. to open it and view the pallete.. it will show all the colors.. anyhow.. you will see that the colors in the pallete will match the number of foliage map entries in the TGA..

So by taking this existing image and pallete.. you can simply resave as your terrains foliage map.. then repaint the sections using the colors in the pallete.. and then copy the foliagemap section into your trn file.. and modify the entries for type of foliage..

Anyhow.. thats just so you dont have to figure out how to create the pallete.. or figure out what colors give some weird behaviour or error.. by 'cloning' the nova foliagemap.. you get a working image.. with a working pallete.. without having to mess with it.. once you understand how it all works.. you can figure that out and make your own images from scratch..

I beleive 255 is the max for the file format.. but I havent seen any nova map use more than 10 ..

I guess you would have to test by making one with a whole bunch.. and make sure it didnt crash.. before taking a ton of time making somehting detailed..

I beleive its one 3di per color..
