BHD~SP Map "Fru Pihl"

Map Name ~ "Fru Pihl Updated"
Mapper ~ "U.F.F.E"

Map DB Link ~
Fru Pihl UPDATED Here

My first forum review :). Sorry again , for my wasteful posts in the comments section for the map.

Anyway, On with the review. A Very nicely crafted map that looks like it took a long time to make (ie: Months as the author told me). Also with some creative ideas and few things i havent seen in any SP maps before. The terrain provided is also of good work , as he didnt select flat , but something with detail.

Well laid out and planned AI Makes this a very, very difficult mission, i know it must have took me a day , maybe even a week to beat it. Some surprises in places and nicely placed and tricky AI, again making it difficult. This map is also very long compared to your average BHD map, or so it seems. Theres to many Enemies for me to count, more than ive seen (in different places). great use of vehicles, as you pass throughout the mission you are on foot very little , but more likely in a Convoy or on a lone Hummvee.

As he states in the map decription in the DB, It involves 4 Enviorments of fighting. City , Airbase, Docks and desert fighting.

Also , i do believe he used the max , or near the max of decorations/buildings you can in a map.

Now for the Bugs and other things. I must say i havent seen any bugs MYSELF. This doesent mean theyre are none , just that i havent had any.

High points of the map ~ A large map, with 3 enviroments of fighting. Less foot travel and great use of hummvees and other supplied Novalogic vehicles. Very well crafted map. Alot of other things that i just cant remember.

Low points of map ~ Not much teammate help, Only the COOP version includes i ridable Blackhawk i believe, Some of the AI were to easy (EG: the start point RPGs were a little off for my type.) and , no littlebirds on strafing runs :(. Lagg encountered on a medium high end system during travel towards the city.

inuyasha it would appear we have very different ideas about what rates a 10 in a map.

This mission opened with the wac file playing before it was supposed to and did not get any better when it did start.

A poorly placed start marker has the player starting on top of the hummer and not manning the gun. This is covered very early in the on-disk manual that comes with the game. Please review.

The wac file continues and plays improperly every time you need to reload a saved game. It's inappropriate in many places and just very annoying at times. If you hear "Wohoo, now that's an explosion" once you hear it way too many times in this map.

The music is too loud and also detracts from game play.

Numerous objects poorly placed - please re-visit the 3D Wireframe section of the manual. When ships dock in port the gangplank actually reaches the dock, it doesn't float about 3 feet above it. Chairs sit on the ground not a foot above it. Etc, Etc.

When you place people in towers they should stand on the flooring, their legs shouldn't hang down below it.

After getting through the roadblock at the airport and coming out the other side of the 'wall' I kept getting killed by the AT4. Lag wouldn't let me turn, aim and shoot fast enough. So it became very simple to just jump off the hummer and let the other guys shoot him. Then it was relatively easy to walk to the convoy shooting the now near blind enemy left in the desert. Did the Russians have a sale on AT4s?

Sound markers inappropriately placed. I shouldn't hear crowd sounds in the desert with nobody around.

Lag was a serious problem on my P4. So much so that after hearing about Somalia having crocodiles (in the middle of town?), I just gave up.

There were lots of decorations (buildings, vehicles, airplanes etc. What was the purpose of the archway before the town? Other than a place to put even more enemy manned with AT4s, it was completely out of place.

As for fast roping in reverse - it isn't new. In fact you can find a post concerning this dated 21 April 2004 - it's on page 2.

Maybe another DFB map rater will have a different opinion but can't see giving this maop anything more than a 5.

Look , about lag i wont say ANY thing other than i have a AMD Athlon 2600+ 2.08 GHz and a ATi Radeon 9800 and i only got lag when approaching the city as the maker did. Once into that i was fine , also at the start the lights created a little lag but thats all. Anyway im sorry i made this review since noones seems to like it , for me it was for fun and gameplay , iwas to busy killing to notice the bugs and this map was big and i cant argue with that. I dont see many(Large maps)......

1. I will thank inyasha for making this review, glad you liked the map :), a very nice wroted review, if you see the map from the non buggy side, and why shouldnt you, you have played the map alot of times, and never noticed a bug, to busy killing ppl ey.....Phyco ;). But point is: It never ruined you'r gameplay.

Now i wanna say thanks to 7>Snake for replying (eventhough it wasnt kind a positive @ all :P:P).

But you see, i agree in all the bugs you writing about, and they really suck , and i should really had noticed em while building the map. :S:S:S

The WOOHOO...yea, annoying, and the RPG RPG from this "dltb417.wav" guy :P...I cut alot of em out.

The guards legs hanging down below the floor : Eer, there is 6 guardtowers, 10 guards, and 1 of em stand with the feet's right below the floor.
This SHOULD only could be seen in the editor....and is also just another thing i missed :/.
The ships = Set waterlevel 65 :P i could not raise the pier, it would'nt had fit to the brigde, and then to the beach.

Quote "I kept getting killed by the AT4. Lag wouldn't let me turn, aim and shoot fast enough"

When you was inside the tunnel, you should had aim'ed up/backwards before Exiting the tunnel, and you would had him on target when you got out in free space again, plz dont blame the map for that, but still annoying, yes.

You dont like the archway and the music eighter.....Lets say the archway is 1000 years old and is from a lost civilisation (which is kind of realistic in Africa :P), and is a memorial ;) thats why its there.
About the music...Well, can i turn down the volume?, if not, would u had complained if the music wasnt there at all?

As for fastroping.....I really dont remember i had been writing AnYwhere that "I" was the one to figure out those events, or they was NEW....No, i wrote, that the fastrope events was reverse, which just is a fact.

When i was making em, i thinked, hmm, i had no idea if that was used in some maps....BUT i was pretty sure at it tho...well, i figured those events out myself, and had never read on it ;)

What inuyasha rated in the map was :

Gameplay
Ideas - Construction of the map
A BIG missionarea where there is action almost all the time
4 Diffirent enviroment's nearly em all in one map
Terreain used
Use of Vehicles
Use of enemy's

What I will like to add :

160 events, that all work perfecly, and is really the soucecode for the gameplay, followed up by 77 waypoints, 56 areatriggers and 40 groups.
And not to be selffish, but i have not seen many waypoints like mine in ANY downloaded map.
Just the ride trough the alleys in the city, the hummer is not touching the walls at any time, so accurate....Naah, its all up to the driver of the hummer, not my waypoints :P

What 7>Snake Havent added :

Not just ONE positive thing....well, u say there is alot of decorations and stuff, but i dont know if that should been take positive in this case, i mean, at least u must had noticed 1 cool thing?? maybe...no?

That remind me of....You have never been in the city????, You exited the game when you heard you had to watch out for crocodiles..That is called a J O K E cmon, what will you'r first thought be, when you sitting in a armored hummer, behind a neat M60, and you get warned about croc's??...Mine would be like : Erm, so??, and would think that my teammate in the radio maybe was saying a little joke!?!?!
(and it was'nt in the middle of the city, it was when you drive into the alley, very close to the border.

Maybe you also exited becouse of lag.....but seriously, i got pretty irritated about reading that you left game becouse you got told a joke :/. and then went to this post and rated it [Censored], you only reached half the way through the map (in time scale), the city is one of the best areas for action.

I really dont know what else to say (:o i think i have said enough already :P)....But in my eyes, you guys give rating for the Wac...IF, it include alot of weird codes, i have downloaded some rating 10 maps from here, i played em, and was thinking like : Eeerrmmm, hmmmm, wtf!?!?!?! no action, no events, no cars, but a couple of teammates on foot, AND a hardcore code wac file, that actually dont do anything to the gameplay itself, or sure it does, but not that much.

WELL, i spend some hours fixing alot of bugs, coz there WAS bugs, not enything bad to the gameplay tho, but should still be fixed.

Fixes :

1. Convoy start delay (letting the mission load before the convoy drive to airbase).

2. Wac start to play 1 second after the convoy begin to drive.

3. Player is manning the gun at startup.

4. ALOT of floating objects at the pier >: ( grrr (but no more floating, and numerous other objects "3D frame'd" :P), and correct placement of style shed's in town etc.

5. RPG guy after the tunnel removed (reason = annoying).

6. Alot of the "WOOHOO, that's an explosion" and "RPG RPG" wacs removed (reason = annoying), some other wacs added.

7. Soundmarker is realistic, no crowdsounds when nobody around.

8. Overlapping problems fixed.

9. Improved Strafingrun at airbase.

10. New enviroment = Dusk3, fit very well into the map.

11. Fog added (should reduce lag just a bit).

12. A few events added.

So, here it is, u migth check it out, or u might not, but this should be cool, and non buggy, might still be "laggy" tho...Objects limit is used.

Fru Pihl COOP (TS) has also been fixed. Same cities, same bugs :P, but fixed.

Fixes in COOP = 4 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9

U.F.F.E.

Every map submitted to DFBarracks starts with a 10. What the map maker does with that is entirely up to him.

For whatever reason, your map was missed by the SP map raters when first submitted in January of 2005. However, after submission Inuyasha became your strongest proponent with 5 of 9 comments (one of which has since been deleted due to profanity). One of those comments was yours and the remaining 3 from 3 different members.

Since inuyasha started this thread concerning your now updated map, it has again come to our attention and was reviewed accordingly.

Maxumum decorations in and of itself does not warrant a rating of 10.

Maximum waypoints in and of itself does not warrant rating of 10.

Maximum events in and of itself does not warrant a rating of 10.

These items combined do not warrant a rating of 10.

The total map experience results in a rating.

I believe a map maker would only present the most complete, best made map possible.

To come to this forum and say you have worked so hard to make this map so good yet still submit it knowing there are numerous errors (witnessed by the list of corrections to your update and your own admissions of known errors and annoyances) says volumes about the map maker.

Yes every map maker makes mistakes that are sometimes not seen during testing, but to say 'oh well I couldn't get it right so I just left it wrong' only reinforces that impression.

While I do not normally respond to criticism of map ratings, I felt in this case it was warranted.

In my opinion, your updated map simply wasn't that good. Others may differ in their opinion, while others may agree.

In any event, get over it, continue to make maps and even when you get a rating of 10, always strive to improve.

And by way of clarification, as indicated in my review, I gave up on your map because of lag (which both you and inuyasha both acknowledge as a problem), coincidentally it happened at the time of the so called 'joke' about crocodiles.

Hmm, maybe i was making me sound like i was going for high ratings, this is not true, i know that maximum everything didnt would get me high ratings, this is just my way of building stuff :), and i didnt say you should higher you'r rating, but at least just mention something good, insteed of just bad things.

I didnt say i worked hard SO hard on this map, would you now plz stop making me sound like a dang idiot?!?!?! Ofcouse i admit the bugs, and go fix em.
"says volume about the maker", erm well, when i posted it, I was happy about the map, and didnt see much as bugs, cos i had not much expirience about bugs and gamefailure on that time, i was more interested in making the events and waypoint fuction rater than some other things, if you noticed that only events had been added in the updatet, and not Fixed ;), and waypoints :P.

And about inuyasha, well i have him msn and we chat, but i have no whatsoever influence on his post on this site, just to make it :O clear!!!!!!!!, i didnt ask for this review, but got a link to it after he made it, and that was great.

About the update : Well, no more floating objects, and it all fit togheter as i like it, so this is my map :).

7>Snake, im glad you spend time on the map, and im glad you posted all those bugs, so they could be fixed, BUT the fact that you still havent mentioned any good things at all in the map, but only everything else really dissapoint me, and make me think of you as a bad map rater (and a BHD rater tho's PC cant handle the object limit in the game...No insult, but cmon man, u cant rate less than a 5 if u havent even completet the map half). You'r stars and rank is NO good if you can only mention bugs, and talk to ppl like you was freaking god.

Again, i dont try to change you'r mind about rating, you'r holyness just annoy me so much!!!

Ok im gonna make it clear in a few easy steps for you you all:

1)This forum is here because the map makers asked for feedback while the mapDB is down if you dont want it just let me know and ill turn it off. Oh and while i remember no profanity in the forum please your posts will be removed if they contian profanity.

2) There is nothing wrong with contructive criticsim that is what this forum is for "if its broke fix it if it aint broke dont fix it"

(hope you get my point on that one)

3) My self and the staff at dfbarracks are here to help members excel in theyre map building and game play not to act like "GODS" yes your correct stars count for nothing but i support what snake as said and allways will on this topic. He is a respected map rater and KNOWS what hes on about 99% of the time lol. And if he needs help rateing a map he will ask.

If you biuild it build it with good foundations cause thats what will fail first.
