thinking of terrain requests
i see all these terrain requests for years but none are ever answered, simply put it takes a lot of time to make one on the average of 4 to 8 hours, and
even more time when theres a theme involved.
i have considered doing some request but work/family and real life takes a toll on free time. and then thought hmmm maybe i can get payed for puting
anywhere from 4 hours to 16 hours of work in to some one elses dream.
now the question would be what would be a fair price to charge for a custom terrain?
do not reply to this and be a jerk this is a serius question, when you consider how many things need to be made and how much time it takes to do them
you would want to get payed your self.

Hey Loa,
Ive been thinking of making terrains myself but as you stated it takes alot of time and effort. But if i was going to do something like that for a
side bussiness i wouldnt do it for less than $10.00 an hour U.S..
Even that would be selling cheaply because terrain making is more art than anything else. And you as the artist is the only person who can put the
pricetag on your work.

You guys do it cause you love it . But instead of making every one elses ideas a cyber reality , concentrate on yours , you are the artist man , the
skilled techy , these guys including myself would love to be able to create these terrains ,time permitting, give people your terrains and let them
create on them . But their suggestions are ideas to learn from as im certain you do

thx for the replys guys, time is the worst enemy for a modder .in my case work wife kids friends, then makeing sure the new terranova exp gets done.for
that i have done all the custom terrains clouds and a ton of new models, then geting every bodies stuff in to the defs seting up a new med then the
installer, which realy doesnt leave a lot of time to do stuff for others, and your right it is a passion atleast for me it is.
but back to priceing after thinking about i figured a $20 us flat fee for a terrain would be fair anything above that such as new grass that renders
as you walk and stuff like that would be another $20 simply do to the fact you need to create new models for the grass, new bump maps like $5 us.
personaly i feel that that price would be fair to all.
the reason i thought of chargeing for some work like that is well to be honest im poor and need money lol
but thx for your opions fellas

$20 is realy quite reasonable, Would that be the same for all versions of df?
What about custom skies $20 too i would think.
The terranova mods would be a good referance for your work, also your personal website. House of Life
which i found while looking for rogue spear mods.

yes sir i do think it would be the same for all versions of df due to the fact that you more or less have to go through all the same steps to create a
terrain, with a few diffrences but not many. the clouds havent thought about that i guess a $5 dollar us fee would be fair.
yeah rgr that on the refrence what i realy need to do is spend some time to update my web page in the 6 years of makeing terrains/clouds i have made
around a 100 terrains some better then others and posted but a few of them, oh man the rogue spear mods, man that was one of the first things i did as
a moder thats some old stuff there..

Lol I Thought your webpage had feeling about it like it hasnt been updated in a while.
I still enjoy playing rogue spear sometimes. but i prefer a less structured gamestyle like the df series, rogue spear in my opinion is more like a
console game. well im glad you mod df games instead!
Have you thought of where you would be advertising for custom terrains?

freedom to rome is where its at go 10 meters or 2000 away allways new maps with new area to fight from.
not sure where im going to advertise or if i even will about the terrains im planing on updateing my site which will probably be by january with a new
look and a new interface where there will be a business end of things, models terrains clouds guns people vehicals and buildings for sale, seeing i
been doing a lot of models latley and actualy have a lot of them threw the years been modeling for about 6 years now so it might be time to empty them
folders in limbo and give them out or sell some.
bytw thanks for the feed back

Good conversation you guys.
I'm from a background of equal pay for equal work. I did work for the state government and yes they paid terrible for the work that was done. With
this said, money is no object if you enjoy doing what you like to. Therefore, take into consideration what your wife's, and family's need are and set
a goal for that. In other words get input from them when costing this stuff out, that way you will not be placed in the dog house for taking too much
time away from family and friends while you are on the computer...
What I mean, is that I work for a Engineering firm and do what I like, which is dealing with computers and programs to do specific tasks. From that
end, I see the fruits of my work in the roads I drive and the bridges I cross every day to work and to play.
WOW what a soap box that turned out to be, as not intended.
If your prices seem a bit high to you , just think of the whole picture. What do I get in a box marked JO:E.? How many maps are in there? For how much
money...$50 at least that is what I paid..
I personally would have paid a lot more , but that goes in to marketing, and expansion packs...yet to come...
The next thing is trying to explain this to the wife right?

not to be rude or anything cause I think you guys who make terrains deserve somthing but I just have 2 counter points to make.
1) some of who are young (like under 18 like me) do not have a way to send money or anything cause of parents, no money cause to young for a job, etc
and
2) I belive it takes alot longer to make the map then the terrein
No offence just I didn't think ppl relized reason number 1
Also most of us would probibly be happy to make our own if ya diddn't need to buy some fancy program to do it (you need like paint shop pro or
somthing don't you) and that falls back into the money problem.
Working on remake of Ranger campaing pt 1 :D

This is a great thread, too bad it's slowed down so much.
I'm new here and am still in shock from dl'ing and looking at terragen. Making a terrain is way more than I thought, hat's off to you fella's.
If anyone is interested in making $$, perhaps one could consider tutoring someone to make a terrain. In my case, I would rather spend money and be
able to keep making maps and learn something.
It took me monthes to learn med, and minutes to teach my friend the basics so that's how it works. Somebody does the hard n nasty then passes it on.
