You are not going to get rid of it. Period.

Only way you will is to play in password protected servers and only give it out to those you trust.

But even that won't keep it out - as I have found out the hard way... some of the ones you trust can turn to cheats.

All you can do is just keep an eye out for it and ban. It is part of online gaming, and part of your job as admin.

I spend 16 hours a day monitoring my server. As soon as i recieve a report I jump into check it out. I also monitor the chat for any indications of people suspecting it, and jump in to check it out.

Some times I can catch people cheating before any one knows about it.

On the other hand, we also won't ban with out proof - to often I have seen people accused of aimbotting when they werent.

We also punt people who accuse players of cheating - all it does is feed the cheaters "rush" on recieving attention, and it also helps protect players names, as once some one gets questioned as a cheater it will taint the opinions of the other players.

I also firmly believe that server admins should be "lurking" at some of the more active cheat forums - That way you get an idea as to what is out there, who is doing what, etc. Helps you keep slightly ahead.

For example, few months ago I knew that a particular server was going to be raided by cheaters - and kept a sharper eye out... They had setup a rage night. I nailed 3 of them that night in my server.

It has been my experience that most cheat to get the attention or rise out of the player - it is really only a few that do it to see what can be done.

So ranting and raving about it is just falling into their plan.

Just calmly watch them, once you get enough evidence then calmly ban.

As long as there is multiplayer games there will be cheaters - and no program is going to effectivly stop it. Only watchful admins - preferablly admins who can tell the difference between an aimbotter and one with skill lol

would hate to see innocent people banned.

Just to add a little on "Cheaters"..

Recently, we here in Aus have been running our own servers from home, so, we no longer have to go into a server that has a ping of 300+, instead, we have pings of 16 to 100.

Now, here's the clincher, we have had a lot of american players come in, play for a while, complain about not being able to hit any of us, are we running cheats..?

The answer is NO, now you know what we have put up with for years. We have had to adjust our playing style to the lag we get when playing on a US server.

They usually leave, and go back to a US server..

So, just because you can't hit them doesn't mean they are cheating, it can be any number of factors..but, they may very well be using "Aids"..

Also, if you get a player who has a high ping come into a game, it will usually drag down the server a bit..

DFX will drag right down if the total ping on the server is above 3,000, so, you need to dump the player with the high ping for the sake of the other players..

I have wolfrat running next to my PC, (where the dedicated server sits :) )so I also watch the chat and have the chatbot running at all times..so I usually know who's in game, and what they are up too..

Just some thoughts....

I was thinking about this - I think the gaming community at large has done a big dis-service to the players when it comes to the area of cheats.

While I agree we don't kneed to have people reporting and whining about all the cheats it seems to me that a more open discussion about it would help educate players in what to look for, etc

I think DFB is a little more forgiving but most sites forbid the dicussion of cheats. Thus most players don't have any where to go to get a second opinion or learn how to tell a cheat from any of the number of factors.

Which in turn turns any little thing into a "cheat".

Any ways, like I said - just keep a sharp eye out for it. When I started hosting my server we had a lot of cheaters. It isn't as bad now, can some times go a week or so with out banning some one for cheating.

Does that mean there aren't any in there? nope - it just means that if they are they are hiding it well enough that no one knows they are lol - but we'll get them some day.

The discussion of cheats here is limited as other sites are, dont post links to them or start a flame war about them. and dont say such and such is running cheats.

discuss tactics used by server admins to keep the server clean. ways you spot cheaters while playing, the tell tale signs of common ones.. such as someone using chams may be caught looking at a wall yet looking like they are tracking something. aimbots, not pointing directly at what they are shooting, such as too high or too low. If tactics for spoting them become more common knowledge then the community as a whole have a greater chance of banning the users of cheats.

If you are serious about catching cheaters allow observers with a password on the server. an admin only will have the password. so if a suspected cheat is reported an admin can follow and watch the suspect without them knowing.

there are other types of cheats such as glitching, cooping, and spawn rapeing. these need to be treated the same as aimbots and chams by server admins.

Another issue is Nova does not have a cheat problem alone. all games have cheaters, there is no foolproof anticheat program at all, so flaming Nova for this issue is nothing more than flaming.
