had an idea similar but it would require members uploading a new ZIP file without a SS in it and if the map has 3-4 BMS if MISes are included only 1
MIS is necessary

Just realized I have another website with 5000mb of space that I'm not using... Could host some things there if needed?

Its a nice thought, but we'd like to keep thing 'In House' so to speak, not be diverting ppl to other places to get maps.
It's a nice offer tho.

Is it required to send the mis file?
Depending on the map, including the mis file can double the file size of the zip file.
A map I tested this theory on the mis file is over 700Kb, the BMS file 223KB. Compressed to a zip file they were 50Kb combined.
Dump the mis file and it dropped down to 19.1Kb.
With the existence of a BMS to MIS converter for a lot of the games, seems to me if space is really needed to be saved you could drop the mis file
from being submitted.
Obviously wouldn't apply to the games that don't have a converter yet.
Just a thought.

bms (or npj/npz for nile) is the only file required, all the rest are optional in the map...

Another dumb idea. lol
How about this one. Remove all maps up until two years ago (or whatever date you decide) and back them up. Which would free up a lot of space until a
more perminant solution can be found.
You'd solve two problems doing this, first you'd have plenty of room for more maps, And Secondly you wouldn't be deleting anything.
Although saying that I fail to see why you can't just start a sister site, and host the new maps from there. I mean I've never hosted my own site
before, but from what I'm told it's easier than ever now to set up one's own site.
Just my thoughts, hope it all works out for you no matter what you decide to do.

just my rambling geriatric thoughts
This has been on my mind for awhile Ive noticed alot of the people willing to have there maps removed are better mappers therefore removing their maps
is reducing the ratio of good maps to bad in the MDB.
Its very appriciated that they are willing to have their maps removed to make room but when the maps are removed to make room for maps that may be of
a less quality kind of defeats the idea of improving the DL activity in the MDB.
Just saying instead of volunteering all of their maps to be removed just have them pick out the maps that are less popular, lower rated, or are the
mappers least favs.
that is of course unless the mapper volunteering all of their maps to be romoved is a lame mapper but as we all know usually the ones that can't map
worth a dang would probably have to big an ego to volunteer their maps to be deleted.
Refering to the above paragraph that shows that those that have volunteered have that attribute shared by most all good mappers, humbility(if thats a
word hehe)
I went through DFLW MDB and removed 10 more maps the DFLW MDB is now at 841 maps does anyone else get that same number in that MDB or does it show
851?

Just to make it clear falcon i said for my maps to be rmoved as i know they are hosted on another site.
Maybe if mappers that have theyre maps hosted else where had a temporary forum section that they could post links in to theyre work maybe it would
temporarly relief the issue.
A forum can be setup in 30 minutes for that with sub sections included per game if you have a word with EE im sure he as an admin and an affiliate
could set someting up for new maps.
do you catch my drift

yeah chris I understand I just dont like the fact that DFB is losing alot of good maps.
not only are we losing good maps but losing maps that could inspire other mappers to improve.
Hosting them somewhere else is good to know but those that like your maps(and the those that host elsewhere and volunteer to have their maps removed)
have to go offsite to find them.
I know its their and your decision but removing good maps to make room for the probability of getting crap maps in their place isnt gonna help the
popularity of our MDB.
As far as your tuts go couldn't they be 3-4 catagories in 1 zip doubt if zipping them all in 1 catagory would save any room though, but there might be
a little saving at the least itll be fewer maps to go through on the MDB.
I know mappacks are agaisnt the rules but something like tuts should be an exception

Is it feasible to remove the 'unwanted' parts of zip files without the author? In TFD maps, a zipped .bms file is between 8-12k while one with jpg
and/or .mis file is anywhere from 30K and up. Assuming the other games are similar, the space saving would be great without loss of map data.
And 2nd: Do you have any idea of when enough cleansing has occured to make it okay to add new maps again?

I think they've cleared out a ton and opened a lot of space, the thing now is there is an issue with the screenshot converter and nobody can upload
screenshots... we're trying to get that fixed...

I get an error even when trying to upload the zip file via the control panel, bypassing the screenshot altogether. That's why i assumed it's still too
full.
Here's the error:
Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpu9YrP1' to '/home/dfb/public_html/mapdb/zips/20769.zip' in

You cannot upload maps at the moment the database seems to be full. I have removed incomplete uploads from previous incidents and hoped that would
give me enough space to upload my map, but it didnt, funny.
BTW: Here are some gathered incomplete uploads that wont show up on teh database anyway. Maybe the admins can remove all incomplete and we have enough
space. Can you at least notifiy me if that wrorks??

Removing the unfinished maps probably wont help as there looks like a corruption issue on map database
(I removed 19073, just to test)
Your links have "...on" instead of "action" in the name
try amending that in your post
like this
http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=1905...
by the way this example - which you gave - is complete and listable in map database so what is wrong with it?

Hmm, maybe the mapper has completed his submission after all. Sorry. That list was compiled in 1/2007 where there were many problems with diskspace.
Anyhow,forget the list. If there is a way to delete the incomplete submission that would free space. But if there is an issue with the database
anyway, only big boss can fix it right?

Short term solution to keep this boat afloat would be to take up the offer/offers of hosting maps elsewhere and hotlink.
Another thought, there's something like 1700 maps for TFD? Back up the garbage truck 'cause you could clean up some room there!

ok i have been missing for ages due to various reasons.
coming back i am gutted to see this sort of problem.
i remember when i was an active map rater that probably only about 30% of maps desreved to stay. there was some talk about a probation period for
maps, however at the time i would of loved to of binned all the rubbish ones.
let me know if i can help
p.s. what are the guidelines for removing a map?

I(and maybe someone else) have removed up to 50 more maps in DF2 DFLW and mainly BHD.
new totals
DF1=347
DF2=3124
DFLW=834
DFTFD=1704
BHD=3763
BHDTN=141
BHDTS=1487
JOTR=799
JOE=929
JOIC=738
DFX=679
MDB total=14,550
MDB home page shows
DF1=347
DF2=3132
DFLW=840
DFTFD=1704
BHD=3794
BHDTN=N/A
BHDTS=1487
JOTR=799
JOE=929
JOIC=N/A
DFX=N/A
I'm not sure but there may be more room for maps when the MDB homepage is updated
