DF1 - Windows XP "SUPERMAN" effect! - SOLVED

Hello All,

I still regularly host a DF1 server.
However, I recently switched from a computer running Windows 2000, to a new computer running Windows XP. Ever since then I have noticed the following "oddities" when hosting DF1.

1. The FIRST death of each player takes the equivalent of FOUR GRENADES, after that all deaths are normal. This can easily be tested by dropping 4 nades at your feet, you will NOT DIE until the 4th grenade! (I call this the "superman effect")

2. Incorrect players frequently being credited with kills when in fact it was someone else.

3. Incorrect type of kill displayed (example, getting a knife kill message when shooting someone)...not sure if points are also incorrect.

Has anyone else experience and noticed these "odd" effects when hosting on a Windows XP computer? If so, any suggestions on what, if anything, can be done to correct them?

Thanks,
Tomkat

Sounds like the software is going out on you. (ie: how old is the cd of the game?). In most nova games , there is a few seconds after respawn when a player is in a sort of timeout, and cannot be killed , people call it 'spawn armor'. On the other 2, i have never seen em. May try a reinstall, and update, and watch the game load to 100%, make sure there are no errors.

DEADLOCK,

I'm not convinced a fresh install would solve the problem. The reason being is that I am currently using a fresh install, since I just got a new computer a few weeks ago. Also, the "superman effect" only manifests itself until a player's first death. After that ALL deaths occur with the usual damage (1 nade, etc). I would think if it were a game software issue, it would occur all the time, and only I would experience it. However, every player who joins my server (whether they are present during map load, or join in the middle of a game) experiences the "superman effect" until their first death.

Didnt suggest it was the computer, i mentioned it may be the cd (the game software). Something may have gone bad in the game software, corrupting the game. How old is the actual cd, and do you use the no cd patch, (if there is 1 for df1)?

ive seen 2,3 it seems like in every DF series up to TFD. sounds like may be a comminication issue from nova to host or host to player or both.

right click on the icon (in start menu) for DF1, click compatibility tab try a diff WIN compatibility

have u updated WINXP with service pack2?

peregrine,

I immediately thought of the compatibility mode also, and I've tried them all, but to no avail, the problem still persists.

Boy,,this is an old 1....

The problem that is...Ive had the exact thing happen to me even before DF2 came out....Ive played in DF1 matches where it took 4 nades to restart/frag/kill yourself/etc...

Its a server side issue.

OK, then I guess we should ask if your hosting when this happens, or have you joined a Multiplayer game?

Its the same thing....

Not trying to pee in your cheerios boss...but it could be a matter of server settings on the host machine...

If the pc is set to host 16 players but can only handle 5 or 7 or 9...that frag issue will result in DF1 and several other games...

Otherwise, it falls to a lag issue...which in most cases is the same thing. The host pc would be my 1st suspect. But I could be wrong....

OK, I agree that it's a server side issue, but still don't know what is causing it. It's definitely NOT "hosting more players than computer can handle," because no matter how few or how many players I host, the effect still remains.

If I join someone else's server from the same computer, it does not take 4 nades to kill me.

It's definitely NOT a spawn shield issue, as I can run around for 10 min and it still takes 4 nades to kill myself.

I've hosted for years on WinNT, then Win2000, and never experienced this until I got this computer with WinXP, now it's been this way ever since.

It must be some little bug between the OS and DF, but I have no idea what it might be.

Thats why I asked if he's hosting, or joining..

If he's the server...then what are the settings he might need to adjust....

so there's nothing to pee on....!!...LOL...

What type of connection? (also, have you totally eliminated the possibility its the cd software of the game?). The compatibility thing was /is an issue w/the win xp os and older nova software, it needs to be set to read win/98 , by default it is set to read win/95 .

I'm on a LAN here when I host (at work) on my lunch break and after work, which is T1. Also, the CD I am using here is a less-than-1-yr-old, damage-free backup copy of my original which is at home.

Right click the game icon, drop to properties, select it, make sure its set to run in win 98 compatibility mode, not win 95. Also, as Phoenix mentioned above, reducing the screen size will help as well, the older nova games only run up to certain resolutions.

I've tried every compatibility mode available, always run at 640x480, though my system can handle much higher, and still the problem persists.

This is really annoying

I may be way offline, but, what about any firewalls, either soft or hard ware?
Could they posably be 'lagging' someone enough to die the first time untill there connection is 'identified'??

DF 1 has a problem with lots of XP installs 'cos of the firewall, although I've never had any problem with it.

Someone who knows more about networking may be able to help more?

One of the first things I did was turn off the XP built-in firewall....

I REALLY don't think it's a LAG issue..
My connection is very fast, plus someone can run around the map for 20min, and if they haven't died...it STILL takes FOUR nades for them to suicide.

SOLUTION

Well, out of frustration, I did a complete uninstall, deleted the Delta Force folder, then did a re-install from scratch. The "superman" effect is now gone! :D

That was my first suggestion, we could have saved you some gaming time if you had done that a week ago, lol. (i've had cd's load and throw effects like that before, like weird map colors, etc, its usually just a faulty install/update, or bad software.)
