How To Make Land warrior Terrain’s
Please be advised you can make terains using only a paint program. however I prefer this way its less work,
Lets start by saying Its easier to make terains than Maps. and maps are so easy to make.
also
thanx to the people who initialy wrote these tutorials. i have edited them and cleared up some confusing aspects. then
combined them together.
hope you do not mind.
Shambles
-----------
programs needed
JASC Paint Shop Pro Or Adobe Paint (im using paint shop pro "psp")
and terragen
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/
Remember to back up your .pff files.
Fullinstall should back up terains.pff
none full install back up dflw.pff
Terragen
This is a bit of a basic explanation on how to use terragen
and the files it creates Please read this 1st then follow on
to the better one that follows.
TERRAGEN
Use terragen which can be found by clicking on the terragen link at top of this post
it can make terrians a bit easier than psp and any other paint
program if used properly but psp offers a bit more tools to work with.
When you open it up go to landscape settings, click on the size button the button could also be called 7680 and a new window will pop up
in here at the top you will see a section called
TERRIAN GRID POINTS
-----------------------------
make sure it set for 257 x 257
this will take less rendering time when ready to render the image.
Now click ok and this will take you back to the landscape section.
Here click on the
GENERATE TERRIAN
------------------------
and another little window will pop up called the
TERRAIN GENESIS this is where you can set the features of your terrian as far as realism and size of hills to be created or canyons.
Once your done setting up the settings click on generate terrian and see what comes up if not happy go back change a
few settings and try again or you can use the tractor symbols at the top of the landscape screen to create your own from scratch.
The left mouse button raises height and the right mouse botton lowers height.
we need two terrains a black and white one and a colour one,
You can either export the file you have just made as a 8bit raw then open it in paint shop pro at 257x257 As this is the
size were using.
then you need to save 2 copys one black and white. and a nother you should colour in.
Or let teragen do most of the work By reading below
Here are the proper instructions.
after you have generated a terain using above instructions you
should follow these steps.
the title of section is usualy where you should go to change the settings
Surface Map
------------
this colour's the terrain
open the surfaces Terragen has stored by clicking open and going to Terragen folder
or make your own by opening the landscape window and at the bottom
highlight surface map and click edit then change its colour
then you can add more
colours by clicking add child.
Then continue to Edit the Child by clicking Advanced distribution
adjusting Coverage ,fractal noise, altitude constraints &slope and changing the colour
Rendering Control
-----------------
uncheck the Sky box
detail Slide to the Right
on the left side of terragen you see a box with a Sun open it
uncheck the box terrain casts shadows
go back to Render control
top right Click Terrain units
Camera Position Should be 128, - 128, - 4500,
Fixed height above surface unchecked
Target position 128, - 128, - 0,
Fixed height above surface unchecked
theres a Zoom Slide move to the right
Render Preview now
you should see a square Landscape
with black on the sides
adjust Zoom Slide to the left until you see a small amount of black on top and bottom just enough to see the whole Landscape
Now Render image
Now save the Large Rendered image as a .BMP
go back to the Landscape window EXPORT IT
as a .RAW 8bits there is a export button
Open the RAW you made in terragen with Paint Shop Pro "PSP"
make width & height 257x257 & check the
Flipped bottom up box
"its at the bottom some times called invert"
then click ok
you see a Black & White Pic
Now Resize it to 1024x1024 and Save As a .PCX (this is your
elevation terrain) and should be saved with _d heres a example
terain_d.pcx
now Open the .Bmp in PSP
"you need to crop the black off the pic"
use the selection tool and make a square around the image then copy it and click paste it will place a new image up Save it as a .TGA Close it
then open the .TGA you just saved to
resize it to 1024x1024
then Save it again (this will be your colour map ) so should be saved with a _c
Example
terrain_c.tga
Close PSP
you should have a Raw a BMP a TGA & A PCX file
the Game needs the TGA & PCX
now you Need a TRN & a BAT to install them
Bat files are Real easy to make.
and all a trn file is is a txt file that tells delta force
which pictures to use
--------------------------------------------------------------
----------
Any way heres a basic trn file txt.
Read this 1st before pasting any text
make a new txt document and paste the following txt in to it
Remember to edit the details on the right that apply.
Then save the file As and select save as all types.

detail_map g8_m
detail_texture g8_det
detail_tilerate 200
water_height 0 ;default, if zero will take from mission
-----------DO NOT COPY THIS LINE OR BELOW-----------
---------------------------------------------
Read all this 2 This is the bat file instructions
To make the bat file make a new txt documnet
then paste the following text. "remembering to edit relivant etails" so read it
save the file as all file types
and name it pack.bat
-----------DO NOT COPY THIS LINE OR ABOVE-----------
@ECHO OFF

yourterrain.trn
ECHO.
ECHO. please visit Dflw.2ya.com

-----------DO NOT COPY THIS LINE OR BELOW-----------
--------------------------------------------------------------
----------
now take the PCX, TGA, TRN, & BAT and place them in your DFLW

DFLW uses a different file format for one of the terrain files, I believe, and maybe also a higher resolution for one or more of them... But
basically, one would use the same method.
Have you tried the 4 DF2 terrain making tutorials linked to in my 1st post above...?
- DF2 Terrain Tutorial, by Dr.EVIL~TAG
- Terrain Making, by EK #5
- Uncle Ahl's Terrain Tutorial For DF2, by Uncle Ahl
- DF2 Terrain Primer, by Bob "Digger" Barnes
