USB Adapter?????
I have a Linksys wireless usb network adapter, but i have a low signal. Is there a better one that will pick up the signal better?(I need one that can
handle at least 15mbps)

linksys are generally pretty good. but...
what grade adaptor did u get? is it 802.11B or 802.11G.
are u using USB1 or USB2?
what is your house walls made of? any large steel objects or bodies of water between wireless router and adaptor?
USB1 and the 802.11B standard are only capable of 11mbps. u wont get faster. to get ur 15 at least u will need 802.11G and USB2. now that said,
what's ur net connection anyway? probably less than either speed. Large bodies of water and steel and concrete tend to effect signals alot due to the
magnetic forces and other things around them.

I aggree with HT....
Also im not a fan of usb routers.
A router has a mb, ram, cpu, operating system, cooling fans etc...but no monitor mouse keyboard. u access it in a similar way as remote access is used
on networks for admin perposes from a remote machine using its monitor/keyboard/mouse
u can use a std machine and turn that into a router to do the same thing
u are running another computor off the powersupply of another machine.
Not a good practice.
The above is an over simplification but should give a basic understanding of the concept and common problems that occur with usb routers.
Add to that what everything HT has said plus microwave ovens, some older cell phones, interfering plus the expense of security solutions, I advise
strongly dont go usb, and wireless.
For a gaming enviroment, there are to many variables to interfer with packet loss and lag.
Gaming/real time protocols do not resend lost packets, unlike when downloading and general surfing.
Only use wireless when hard wire is impossible. If it is difficult u usually find the extra cost of hard wire will more than offset the costs of
security, locating interference, internal network congestion due to low bw speed and the total time it takes to transfer information/files.
HT mentions wireless is capable of 11meg, in practice about 8 meg. hardwire, is 100meg or close, and with little extra cost with right switches and
std ethernet cards on mb s now up around 1000 meg.
most routers with built in switches are curently 10 meg thu they are now coming out at 100 meg built in switches.

usb1 and usb2 is the grade of usb ports that u have. usb1 has a slow speed. only about 12 mbps as it's max, usually only about 11 though in reality.
if u have usb2 ports, everytime u plug the adaptor in it will say (if u run windows xp) that u have plugged a low speed usb device into a high speed
usb port.
by the way, u can't just go get USB2 ports for your computer, if u want to run a usb wireless adaptor on it. the adaptors require too much power to
run, and most usb adaptors wont give the power it needs. U'll need something more along the likes of a powered USB hub if u want to go up to USB2.
Now at a rough guess... u running a DSL net connection yeah? since ur net genrally speaking is about 1.5Mb/s and ur wireless is 11Mb/s then ur
wireless is still faster, and dropping up to 54Mb/s isn't going to make much difference. That and the stupid overheads while gaming on wireless make
it a bit useless.
don't get me wrong, wireless is great for normal surfing and downloads, but the amount of both way transfer for gaming, makes wireless die pretty
quick. most surfing of the net is only single way transfer, something the wireless handles alot better.

haha it gets worse Steps, I work for Telstra hehe. Most of the time we don't have that msg on our system. which is good cos the average wait time is
about 30 mins. I also have to help all the other ISP's fix their adsl faults. as they log them to telstra through my dept too.
