Map database cleaning.

Fireant - 11-26-2007 at 03:00 PM

Well members,

The database is full again. So with a few rules to staff members, its cleaning time.

Anything that is invalid is history. Bad screenshot, poor description. Invalid file....Gone. It's 'tough love'

I've blown the whistle to start with some of the older game vertions, but mods and skins are not allowed either. If it isnt a complete map, its gone....sorry.

To the members that just cant wait long enuff and drop 20 maps....19 get remooved. It's not about your account, its about your patience level. And the quality of the maps.

All raters must use disgression in the selection of the map that are remooved. Rated maps stay, tho comments can be remooved on a basis of spam or flaming etc. All DFB rules apply in this.

As we make room, no u2u will be given to the mapper whos map was dumped. If you wish to voulunteer maps to be remooved, please post here with a link.
The Staff will address it.

It's something that has to be done at this time. If anyone has a complaint, feel free to send me a u2u, it will be answered.

Cheers.

daneel - 11-27-2007 at 03:27 AM

As per last time, I went thru all my maps and re-uploaded the zip files; as bare as possible; without screenshots and .mis files, if they existed. In my few maps, I saved over 100k and if everyone goes thru their own likewise, the space would be more than sufficient I suspect.

I really lookforward to new maps and so please, everyone, 'just do it!'

chrislew200~RSU~ - 11-27-2007 at 05:02 AM

You may remove any maps under the chrislew200 account rsu has copies of what i want to keep.

I searched through database and found

Land Warrior Maps

and

TFD Maps

The id that submitted these maps is Col.Vanisher*CS* therefore to protect the security of the map database that is the only id that can make the deletion request on them.

chrislew200~RSU~ - 11-28-2007 at 07:47 AM

In fact if it makes space you can remove my wave lists and tutorials i dont know if they take a lot up but remove them if required i have backups Just make sure iceman or EE has backups first they can use them as they wish.

I will be finishing in the DFB community within the next two months anyway just make sure those two have them for refrence ill make sure Rap~RSU~ has copies.

Thanks

Fireant - 11-28-2007 at 09:20 AM

Those can stay chris. The forums and the map DB arent connected. If my memory serves me correctly, they are 2 different animals.

I'm talking to Roguewarrior47 on the phone now - Just read him your reply pigskin

- The problem is that he doesn't know his password, and the email address he used to register no longer exists, thus he can't request a password change.

Back when this all took place, he sent a u2 to A.Bullet explaining it, but never got a reply back....

He just sent his motherboard in, will be offline for 2 weeks (unless something changes), and thus can't respond him self.

perigrine falcon - 11-30-2007 at 02:58 PM

I removed 30-40 BHD maps those with corrupt ZIP files, no files or no BMS, bad SS, bad descripition, BMS that caused SYS dump or other crash, a few maps that noone in their right mind would ever run in a server(floating objects wrong spawns few items[10 or less] basically any map that looked like any1 with the very basic knowledge of the editor could make blind folded in 2 min).

right now I dont have the room to install BHD/TS , ZIP programs, DL maps ETC to test/check maps for possible deletion but if there is anyone that cant upload a map please inform some1 and we will try to make room

before submitting please make sure the map has been tested(few glitches, few floating objects, little flicker, the right spawns etc) and all the right files are in ZIP when submitting please use a good SS of the map and leave a good description. If SS is too big convert it to JPG or send it to someone to convert for you

MDB totals

perigrine falcon - 12-1-2007 at 02:32 AM

(might be good for future reference)

DF1=347
DF2=3132
DFLW=851
DFTFD=1704
BHD=3793
BHDTN=141
BHDTS=1487
JOTR=799
JOE=929
JOIC=738
DFX=679

MDB total=14,600

Fireant - 12-1-2007 at 08:42 AM

Thanks Jobiwan...done.

I spent 5 hours last night going thru the BHD database and dumped about 400 maps on the criteria stated above by P.Falcon as well as some that had been posted 5 times and more!!! I started with 2002 and went all the way to Jan of 2004.

Each map I remooved had a good long look before all comments removed, etc. Some even had rateing. However, Many of those rated maps were a 10 map with no comment and the map was garbage, or something invalid and was never gone back and updated. Even dumped a few of my own early maps. Some maps with out a rateing even avoided the axe simply because of the desciption and the potential for good play as well as some that were simple, but had rave reviews by many players. Sometimes a map can have what I call 'Less is More'

It doesnt have to max the item count or be custom to be great. It could just be the manner in which the objects were used. (Lot of posts on what us old raters add or subtract in rateing points about maps)

As I stated above in this post, I started at the back and worked my way forward. Mainly because alot of ppl wont go that far back unless they are after a specific map and use the search function. But, Even with new maps submitted. They must follow the same criteria as the old map rules.

The only stay of execution is that you have 7 days from the post date to fix anything that needs to be updated. If not, that map is remooved as well.

I will also make 1 final note. Since it takes many man hours to physically make space in the map database for everyone. I will insist you post 1 map a day. The 1st guy that thinks "weeeee....I can upload all the maps i made this week" Guess what. I will personally remoove all but 1 of my chooseing. We arent wasteing hours upon hours to have 3 jokers fill it right back up again.

It hasnt been made an official rule, but I will be pushing to see that it is. And I'm sure the bulk of the members here would agree. Everyone gets to have a day or so on the 1st page, not bumped back a few pages because someone blew their wad in 1 shot. It's a respect issue.

Thanks all.

Team Sabre maps

MIAebow - 12-1-2007 at 01:22 PM

Hi guys, you can clean out all my Team Sabre maps if you want to. There's quite a few of them, which should save you some space.

MIA

IDEA

MIAebow - 12-1-2007 at 01:32 PM

After writing the above I had an idea which I wondered whether you'd considered or not.

I was thinking to myself that of all the things that really take up room on a site like yours, screen shots has to be way up there.

So why not go back 3, 4, or 5 years and delete all screen shots from every map uploaded in every format. After all Screen shots can be recovered where as some maps can't. I wouldn't mind betting that that would save you a lot of room.

Just a thought

MIA

Fireant - 12-1-2007 at 01:48 PM

The screen shots are filed in separately, they are not a part of the map upload.

Darn good thought tho.

Eagle_Eye - 12-1-2007 at 05:14 PM

Once a screen shot is uploaded, it's converted to a jpg, and the original file is deleted by the php code..

So, they don't really take up a lot of room..

Not that we actually have access to the site via ftp..

Thanks bud,
p1g already posted the links above. Ill see to those myself.
I will ask that you choose 1 acct to keep tho so I can close the other.
We dont allow multiple accounts.

perigrine falcon - 12-2-2007 at 03:47 PM

had an idea similar but it would require members uploading a new ZIP file without a SS in it and if the map has 3-4 BMS if MISes are included only 1 MIS is necessary

Assassin Xaero - 12-3-2007 at 02:04 AM

Just realized I have another website with 5000mb of space that I'm not using... Could host some things there if needed?

Fireant - 12-3-2007 at 02:15 AM

Its a nice thought, but we'd like to keep thing 'In House' so to speak, not be diverting ppl to other places to get maps.

It's a nice offer tho.

IcIshoot - 12-3-2007 at 04:33 AM

Is it required to send the mis file?

Depending on the map, including the mis file can double the file size of the zip file.

A map I tested this theory on the mis file is over 700Kb, the BMS file 223KB. Compressed to a zip file they were 50Kb combined.

Dump the mis file and it dropped down to 19.1Kb.

With the existence of a BMS to MIS converter for a lot of the games, seems to me if space is really needed to be saved you could drop the mis file from being submitted.

Obviously wouldn't apply to the games that don't have a converter yet.

Just a thought.

Assassin Xaero - 12-3-2007 at 05:26 AM

bms (or npj/npz for nile) is the only file required, all the rest are optional in the map...

Another dumb idea. lol

MIAebow - 12-3-2007 at 02:46 PM

How about this one. Remove all maps up until two years ago (or whatever date you decide) and back them up. Which would free up a lot of space until a more perminant solution can be found.

You'd solve two problems doing this, first you'd have plenty of room for more maps, And Secondly you wouldn't be deleting anything.

Although saying that I fail to see why you can't just start a sister site, and host the new maps from there. I mean I've never hosted my own site before, but from what I'm told it's easier than ever now to set up one's own site.

Just my thoughts, hope it all works out for you no matter what you decide to do.

MIA

perigrine falcon - 12-3-2007 at 08:14 PM

just my rambling geriatric thoughts

This has been on my mind for awhile Ive noticed alot of the people willing to have there maps removed are better mappers therefore removing their maps is reducing the ratio of good maps to bad in the MDB.

Its very appriciated that they are willing to have their maps removed to make room but when the maps are removed to make room for maps that may be of a less quality kind of defeats the idea of improving the DL activity in the MDB.

Just saying instead of volunteering all of their maps to be removed just have them pick out the maps that are less popular, lower rated, or are the mappers least favs.

that is of course unless the mapper volunteering all of their maps to be romoved is a lame mapper but as we all know usually the ones that can't map worth a dang would probably have to big an ego to volunteer their maps to be deleted.

Refering to the above paragraph that shows that those that have volunteered have that attribute shared by most all good mappers, humbility(if thats a word hehe)

I went through DFLW MDB and removed 10 more maps the DFLW MDB is now at 841 maps does anyone else get that same number in that MDB or does it show 851?

chrislew200~RSU~ - 12-4-2007 at 08:19 AM

Just to make it clear falcon i said for my maps to be rmoved as i know they are hosted on another site.

Maybe if mappers that have theyre maps hosted else where had a temporary forum section that they could post links in to theyre work maybe it would temporarly relief the issue.

A forum can be setup in 30 minutes for that with sub sections included per game if you have a word with EE im sure he as an admin and an affiliate could set someting up for new maps.

do you catch my drift

chrislew200

Distant Storm - 12-4-2007 at 08:43 AM

Have you discussed using php to compress files on the sever.?

perigrine falcon - 12-4-2007 at 08:13 PM

yeah chris I understand I just dont like the fact that DFB is losing alot of good maps.

not only are we losing good maps but losing maps that could inspire other mappers to improve.

Hosting them somewhere else is good to know but those that like your maps(and the those that host elsewhere and volunteer to have their maps removed) have to go offsite to find them.

I know its their and your decision but removing good maps to make room for the probability of getting crap maps in their place isnt gonna help the popularity of our MDB.

As far as your tuts go couldn't they be 3-4 catagories in 1 zip doubt if zipping them all in 1 catagory would save any room though, but there might be a little saving at the least itll be fewer maps to go through on the MDB.

I know mappacks are agaisnt the rules but something like tuts should be an exception

daneel - 12-6-2007 at 11:12 AM

Is it feasible to remove the 'unwanted' parts of zip files without the author? In TFD maps, a zipped .bms file is between 8-12k while one with jpg and/or .mis file is anywhere from 30K and up. Assuming the other games are similar, the space saving would be great without loss of map data.

And 2nd: Do you have any idea of when enough cleansing has occured to make it okay to add new maps again?

Assassin Xaero - 12-6-2007 at 11:43 AM

I think they've cleared out a ton and opened a lot of space, the thing now is there is an issue with the screenshot converter and nobody can upload screenshots... we're trying to get that fixed...

daneel - 12-6-2007 at 11:55 AM

I get an error even when trying to upload the zip file via the control panel, bypassing the screenshot altogether. That's why i assumed it's still too full.

Here's the error:

Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpu9YrP1' to '/home/dfb/public_html/mapdb/zips/20769.zip' in /home/dfb/public_html/mapdb/mapdb_functions.php on line 1738

General Electric*** - 12-6-2007 at 10:09 PM

You cannot upload maps at the moment the database seems to be full. I have removed incomplete uploads from previous incidents and hoped that would give me enough space to upload my map, but it didnt, funny.

BTW: Here are some gathered incomplete uploads that wont show up on teh database anyway. Maybe the admins can remove all incomplete and we have enough space. Can you at least notifiy me if that wrorks??

p1gs1ck - 12-7-2007 at 01:17 AM

Removing the unfinished maps probably wont help as there looks like a corruption issue on map database

(I removed 19073, just to test)

Your links have "...on" instead of "action" in the name

try amending that in your post

like this

http://www.dfbarracks.com/mapdb/index.php?action=dm&mid=1905...

by the way this example - which you gave - is complete and listable in map database so what is wrong with it?

General Electric*** - 12-7-2007 at 02:22 AM

Hmm, maybe the mapper has completed his submission after all. Sorry. That list was compiled in 1/2007 where there were many problems with diskspace.

Anyhow,forget the list. If there is a way to delete the incomplete submission that would free space. But if there is an issue with the database anyway, only big boss can fix it right?

Fireant - 12-7-2007 at 04:41 AM

Ive sent out emails trying to contact the folks that can fix it.

I havent recieved any reply as of yet folks,

ozferal - 12-8-2007 at 01:35 AM

Short term solution to keep this boat afloat would be to take up the offer/offers of hosting maps elsewhere and hotlink.

Another thought, there's something like 1700 maps for TFD? Back up the garbage truck 'cause you could clean up some room there!

daneel - 12-8-2007 at 07:10 AM

one man's garbage is another man's dinner ...

Jonny Rubber - 12-8-2007 at 09:39 AM

ok i have been missing for ages due to various reasons.

coming back i am gutted to see this sort of problem.

i remember when i was an active map rater that probably only about 30% of maps desreved to stay. there was some talk about a probation period for maps, however at the time i would of loved to of binned all the rubbish ones.

let me know if i can help

p.s. what are the guidelines for removing a map?

perigrine falcon - 12-11-2007 at 02:45 AM

I(and maybe someone else) have removed up to 50 more maps in DF2 DFLW and mainly BHD.

new totals

DF1=347
DF2=3124
DFLW=834
DFTFD=1704
BHD=3763
BHDTN=141
BHDTS=1487
JOTR=799
JOE=929
JOIC=738
DFX=679

MDB total=14,550

MDB home page shows

DF1=347
DF2=3132
DFLW=840
DFTFD=1704
BHD=3794
BHDTN=N/A
BHDTS=1487
JOTR=799
JOE=929
JOIC=N/A
DFX=N/A

I'm not sure but there may be more room for maps when the MDB homepage is updated

perigrine falcon - 12-15-2007 at 06:30 AM

I have removed around 30 more BHD/TS maps a few had large zipped screen shots so hopefully there will be be enough room for new map uploads at least though the weekend

bigsmellyfart - 12-15-2007 at 06:35 AM

does this mean that the data base is at max number of records or just out of HDD
space

perigrine falcon - 12-15-2007 at 08:44 AM

I'm guessing it has to do with amount of storage in bytes since it seems i sometimes have to remove several maps to get 1 to upload right

chrislew200~RSU~ - 12-15-2007 at 09:03 AM

Yes it is to do with storage space, the map record numbers should be good for a couple of 100 thousand or even more.

if i remember correctly as that was a previous error when i was here cant remember exact figures im old and senile now.

chrislew200

Brickbat - 12-20-2007 at 02:12 AM

I have made this post before, however someone deleted it. We can not play any of the old IC mod map that were made for IC mod 1 or IC mod 2. The buildings and terrains have changed. Why not delete those and it would be a start to space saving.

chrislew200~RSU~ - 12-20-2007 at 08:35 AM

I must agree with papa this issue will free up space

perigrine falcon - 12-21-2007 at 01:05 AM

no way around them being unusable?

I was thinking if it was still possible with the right old JO updates to roll back to where you could play these maps. It might be ok just to leave the SP for now and remove all the MP maps.

Are some of the maps in the IC MDB still playable??? IC MOD 3 maybe????

If this was the case it might be hard to determine which maps are unusable(mod1 & 2) and which are usable

RAP~RSU~ - 12-21-2007 at 02:37 AM

Just an Info.

I started to remove all kind of Crapmaps in the JO,JOE and IC.

I tested them all....so i know the [Censored]maps.

Anyway delated all Maps in IC below a rating of 6.

And all with no comments or crap.

Go through the other sections when i got Xmas Holidays.

Merry Xmas;)

GFG.Papa - 12-21-2007 at 06:24 AM

You can delete any of our old maps. Anything over 6 months old, I dont want to play those old maps anymore.

Here's two more you can remove in JOE coop maps (both are mine):

Done..thank you.

blackbeast - 1-15-2008 at 09:47 PM

Can I assume that we have archived all the maps that were removed, or have they just been completely deleted / lost forever? :(

Fireant - 1-16-2008 at 04:37 AM

Deleted.

Alot of what was trashed had either invalid files, or didnt work any longer due to a few game updates and some were just absoloute junk that had sat for years with little or no downloads, rateings or feedback.

Eagle_Eye - 1-16-2008 at 05:42 PM

Well, I would have downloaded each one, along with a copy of the screen shot..

Just for posterities sake..

This is what I did when I removed all the skins from the map database..I have them all here in folders for each game.

perigrine falcon - 1-17-2008 at 04:04 AM

good to have saved the skins they can be made available in the future in their own area but most of the maps removed(speaking of those Ive removed) would need an area all their own called "junk maps" most of those removed have long been forgotten and wont be missed by but a few(mapper).

Its the MDB tough love thats long been needed to keep those 4-50 total objects that float glitch and or flash maps from being dumped and polluting the MDB so much as to where its tough for people to find a good map. Its a different story if they at least try to update but you get some that say "If it needs to be fixed your welcome to fix it"

Those that are either to arrogant, or to lazy to fix problems in their maps when clear to every1 but them that their map is total crap its time to say bye to that map.

Bad Link I think

opmankim - 1-27-2008 at 03:49 AM

No offense mate, but I dont work that way. If its crap, its gone. No tears, no remorse. Im sick and tired of the cry babies that put out the garbage were cleaning...I havent seen a single complaint yet about a map that was remooved.

Give it time and youll have the same problem at Reload. Bunch of crap maps and youll have to sort it.

Maybe then youll agree. Until then, i'm not gonna bust a staff member at all for dumping the trash.

It's still cleaning time.

Tough Love.

Better update quick then, because if your map is over a week old and not updated...its toast. Work on your english and grammar while your at it. And quit digging up old and dead threads.

I have 0 tolerance. Don't push my buttons.

cleaned

My first 2 maps: Moonless Serenade (18269) and Day-O (18381) in the TFD datadase can be deleted.

Not much maybe but I'm trying to help ...

CybeR SoldieR - 2-3-2008 at 05:06 AM

Ya can delete all maps by me seeing half of them have been deleted anyway.

RAP~RSU~ - 2-3-2008 at 05:39 AM

The cleaning of the JO sections is done.

So the maps which are in there now ,will stay.

Unfixed newer maps or dumpers will be removed weekly.

When you know or made some BHD or DF2 maps which can go bye bye,post the Title and ID in here please.

We will take care of them.

Thank you

Eagle_Eye - 2-4-2008 at 03:37 PM

Major Headache tells me our space has been doubled, so you can stop cleaning maps.

You may carry on with maintainance, and remove stuff that doesn't work..etc...

If we have any errors now, I'll need to know what they are, so I can get Mich from the host to take a look at the php code for us.
