GoldenEagleLST - 4-27-2006 at 10:21 AM

What are players playing coop looking for
1. Short quick easy missions
2. long missions with lots of goals and guys to kill
3. ground missions

It has been my experience in mapping that players (as a rule) don't really like maps that are very long. Anything over an hour is pushing it.

How about adding to your list:

Short, very painful, very very HARD missions (with no respawners).

well, I'm not a big fan of DFX..but arent those two the opposite facts?

and fred.nl, you can make the AI respawn...so you dont need lot sof guys in the map anf it makes it more harder, since you cant just clear everything, then walk around...

If you read what GoldenEagle said (err... asked), "What are players playing coop looking for" its a question, not a statement.

I've never played DFX, but for BHD and JO, I've noticed that players don't really mind how long the mission is, as long as its not repetitive or boring. Most of the time, if there is always something new and creative to do, people don't get bored. Personally, I like longer, complete custom maps. Usually a challenge, but not too hard to beat.

I have to disagree with Mr WebMaster... I don't know many people that like short maps that are really really hard... most of the time on those, you sit and die about 5 times trying to find the bug that keeps shooting you... also, enemies in or behind folige tend to be a pain in the rear...

I haven't seen too many people that don't like respawners as long as they don't respawn forever and they don't respawn infront of you.

Good luck with your maps.

Long missions work well for SP maps, but anything over an hour is too long for coop, Especialy if the ai have super capabilities. Nothing more frustrating than playing a long map where every ai can see through walls and starts shooting before you can see them and hits you with every round as soon as you can.

Also make your goals linear. first goals in the first objective, second goals in second etc etc. dont have destroy technicals as first goal and have them at the last objective. good idea here is make them show after the first obj is clear when you redirect to the next waypoint. reason is if it says destroy technicals and you end up running around a cleared area searching for non exhisting tech......kinda wasted time.

Not too many ais between objectives if the objectives are spread out, maybe a couple ambushes or some other surprise. no fun when it takes 10 minutes to get to an objective and died 10 times.

At objectives make the player respawn out side and not in the middle if its a small compound or town. if your playing as a team, its better if you run through the clear areas to get to your team when you die. if its a long base with many buildings add a psp or 2 along the way to shorten the run.

Remember that its a game and meant to be fun. long, frustrating, poorly decorated maps, that are not well thought out are not fun. better to have a map that lasts for 15 minutes thats well designed, ais that see you when you see them, placed in nice hiding spots to keep the player on there toes. with clearly defined objectives than an hour of "300 empty buildings surrounded by the same tree, 10 goals scattered and 200+ ai random placed and too acurate to be human."

Long missions with lots of goals and guys to kill. When I finish a long intense battle map, I want to feel thirsty and ready to down a cold beer. LoL!

Well, I really like the coops, where players are forced to work as a team, lol....in BHD those kind are only MC maps, where the PSP are miles apart or none existing.....but I hate it when they glitch out or dont shoot the bgs...

At the last MC coop map, we all died at least 10 times at one point since everyone just ran acroos a bridge and got killed..I started to pick the enemy one by one and found out, that they were hiding in the bushes 15 m away...and only 3 guys....
Noob scale just keeps rising....

So yea, please, make something like this...but dont put the PSPs miles apart, lol

People like coop maps for several reasons, but I think the main one is it's instant action at least in most good coop maps. As for respawns, I like the option because you're not restricted to the 250 limit of enemy soldiers.

As someone has already said though, as long as you don't see the respawns it can and does work. I usually respawn the enmy when I'm after an intense feeling of being trapped, and wanting to shoot my way out. I have succeeded a few times, but been disappointed more times that I'd care to mention here. lol

All the best

Its not that old... and you still replied to it... as for the 250 limit on AIs, im not sure about in JO or DFX, but if you do over around 120-130 it changes all the names to "Unknown"...

Comedian, lol......

I got 246 AIs in my latest coop, lol....had to cut away a part of the map, so I could keep the objects under 1000...

Assassin Xaero - 12-24-2006 at 10:14 AM

They still work, but the names change to unknown... It might just be me, but I find it really annoying... can't find out who did what...
