DFLW: Single player is fine but freezes when i try to join Multiplayer

Shife - 8-17-2005 at 01:36 AM

Ok as soon as I join multiplayer everything is fine until i click on a server. Any server Nova, pub, private....It says joining game and thats it freezes---I hit ctrl+alt+del and its not responding. If i let it sit for about 3 min it begins running again on task manager but never goes past joining screen. I have tried every possible firewall setting (up, down, with exeptions and DFLW checked). Its not my IP either because I play it on my laptop with the same IP. I have seen this problem all over forums but never a solution. Plz any information that anyone has would be most appreciated....

System-
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
300 G Hard Drive
1 G Ram
GeForce 6600 128M PCI Vid Card
56 K Dial up for connection

DEADLOCK - 8-18-2005 at 06:44 AM

Make sure the game is updated.

Shife - 8-19-2005 at 01:56 AM

It is to the newest version.

bluevelvet - 8-19-2005 at 03:03 AM

make sure there is no firewall blocking it from accessing the internet and that you have all the right ports open, it sounds like a firewall problem

Shife - 8-22-2005 at 11:17 PM

Doesnt work with the firewall up or down. I even had Nova give me a port number to try and still nothing....

DEADLOCK - 8-22-2005 at 11:42 PM

Ok, when you join next time, and it freezes, simply alt& tab to minimize game while its in a frozen state. This will allow any error messages being triggered to appear. Then holler back w/the culperate. (if there is one).

Shife - 8-26-2005 at 03:00 AM

I do and most times it just shows some of my desktop but the resolution is still high like the game is still up. Plus the task manager says that the game is not responding. No errors just never moves....

Shife - 8-26-2005 at 04:00 AM

Ok i found someone else that has the exact same problem as me on another thread. If you guys dont mind taking a look at his thread let me know if something he said triggers an idea...

Not sure if this matters but i get that virtual memory swap error just like him...

Steptoe - 8-26-2005 at 07:55 AM

User pinger.

Shife - 8-26-2005 at 11:44 AM

Sorry but I dont know what user pinger means.....Can you explain plz?

Did you follow the previous instructions? ie: there is a fix for this if you read and follow both threads. Pinger is a tool that lets you join a game w/out going directly through Nova, like a remote tool.

Shife - 8-26-2005 at 10:43 PM

I dont get the 16 bit memory error. But I will get the pinger and try that. Ill keep you posted.

Shife - 8-28-2005 at 09:27 AM

Ok just tried the Pinger and no luck does the same thing, never gets past joining session. I hit ctrl alt del and it was not responding.

Steptoe - 8-29-2005 at 06:35 AM

Pinger is showing the servers, adds them to bottom window?
Added the server to your LW join page?
And open lw from pinger?

Dont just diable your firewall uninstall it

Shife - 9-4-2005 at 06:55 AM

Well some it lets me add and some say "no response from novalogic" is that normal?

DEADLOCK - 9-4-2005 at 07:31 AM

Something is blocking the communication to the servers, (pinger, or any other tool is going to experience the same errors as it will be blocked by the same tool). If you ALT&TAB,,,,,,, not cntrl alt and delete,,,, just ALT& TAB ,,,,,, when this timeout happens, there should be a few things running behind the game, chances are the culperate is there, look on the desktop, and in the lower tool bar.

Shife - 9-4-2005 at 12:03 PM

Well its kinda hard to do that because when I try that or anything else the large resolution from the game is still running and I can never see the desktop unless I end the program. But I can see the task bar and nothing out of the ordinary is running there---internet conn, yahoo mess., and nvidia settings manager.

Shife - 9-4-2005 at 12:19 PM

Ok here is something also, I went to a private server that I know the password to. I accidentally typed the incorrect password however and when I tried to join it told me that I had the incorrect pass. Anyway I'm not sure how this works but wouldnt I have to connect to the server for it to tell me the pass was wrong?

DEADLOCK - 9-4-2005 at 10:24 PM

Try a reinstall of the game, basically, your saying its working to a point then just not. (also, are there any driver updates for your video card out?) This would throw errors as well.

Shife - 9-6-2005 at 05:16 AM

Reinstalled and updated driver and still no luck. I also removed any spyware utilities I had installed and still nothing.

Shife - 9-6-2005 at 08:03 AM

Ok I just let it set for about 5 min and I got to the verifying screen and then it just sits there. ITs not froze I can alt tab out of it and everything is fine. Task manager says its running and my crosshairs arent frozen at the verify screen. lol now what? Thanks for all the help so far by the way guys I really appreciate it.

DEADLOCK - 9-6-2005 at 10:23 PM

By the length of this thread, and the obvious issue, its either 1 of 2 things,,,, there is something blocking the communication to the server,, ie: firewall/router,,,,, or the game cd software is shotty. (what are the names of any firewalls your running , as well as routers, and antivirus programs). Also, lets discount the cd at this point, you claimed it works on another computer, but can you run any 'single player missions' w/out going online to try a game? ie: what happens when you try a single player mission?

gomerpile - 9-8-2005 at 08:50 AM

Okay guys, my firewall is Norton Internet Security. it has all the email protection, anti virus, firewall. i have this TURNED OFF...every component to it is OFF. everything on my system is turned off except the key system processes. i dont have a router, i have a 56k conn...i am getting high speed DSL service tomorrow. im doubting that the dsl has anything to do with this. i have used DFLW and TFD pinger for both of them, neither makes either game work. i have used ip joiner and all that stuff...nothing works. i can play single player missions fine. my old computer could play it just fine, this new one it does the lock-up thing.

i am hoping someone thats not technically retarded like i am can help me with this. would really be great.

DEADLOCK - 9-8-2005 at 10:17 PM

Uninstall the norton security, (you can always add it back in a few minutes), and i almost garuntee those games will run fine. Simply turning it off w/that program does not COMPLETELY shut it down. ie: some parts of the norton continue to run in the background.

Single player missions run fine for me, and I can play DFX online too. I had nortens but I uninstalled it and now all I have is windows XP firewall.

DEADLOCK - 9-10-2005 at 11:41 PM

One last stab, (with the game shutdown), select 'start' ,,,,,, (on desktop),,, then 'all programs' ,,,, then Novalogic,,,,, then 'right click' on the dflw tab,,, open the properties, and select 'compatibility' option. Post what version of Operatring System is in the box.

gomerpile - 9-12-2005 at 10:09 AM

okay, i uninstalled my norton internet security. my windows firewall is off. i tried that compatibility thingy, and the box was not checked. ive tried them all. none works. im just gunna give up, or install another version of windows or sumthin. cus this is annoying :(

if ANY1 has any help to this, email me at

gomeraod@hotmail.com

thanks, Gomer

Ooops sorry....I'm running Windows Xp Media Center Edition 2005

gomerpile - 9-13-2005 at 12:58 PM

i also have media center 2005...could this be the problem? i really dont want to go buy a new os :(

well ill try it i guess...

perigrine falcon - 9-13-2005 at 01:32 PM

it could be a compatibility issue with the OS what OS does your old computer have(the one that LW works on?) if this is the case you might need a patch for the game to make it work in the OS which more than likely hasnt been wrote yet.

sometimes a CD will work right for an old install of a game and will still install on a new comp but it may have been slightly damaged but wouldnt show any errors while installing try cleaning the CD with windex uninstalling, reinstalling and undating the game to ver 1.00.42

you may hve to wait for a windows update to fix the problem

DEADLOCK - 9-13-2005 at 11:22 PM

Im not familiar w/that os, but in the properties , try selecting 'win98/me' vs the win95 , then apply. (most of microsoft's stuff is platformed off those versions.)

That is what I am beginning to think that it is my OS. My scanner wont work with it either and I talked to the Manufacturer and they said that Media Center runs 64 bit and they dont make drivers that are compatible with Media Center 2005. Man this is a nightmare my other OS is just XP so you might be right about that too. It seems all roads point to our OS being the culprit....Any chance of someone ever making a patch you think guys????:D

DEADLOCK - 9-18-2005 at 12:12 AM

Based on what i read about that os , (from microsoft) , they barely warrant it. ie: i went to their homepage, and found little to no info on it, and what i found didnt impress me at all. Swap os's if you have another, win98/win xp are much more stable for gaming.

Well most of your better computers come with it as the OS now. Almost all of the ones that I looked at when I bought this one ran with Media Center. Also I went to Media Center site and they have alot of video presentations, not sure if you meant microsofts site or media centers that you visited. Changing OS is not an option for me though because I use the media center to record satellite tv and then I burn alot of it to DVD and things like that. So thanks for the help guys and I'll continue to check back in case something else is figured out.

gomerpile - 9-23-2005 at 12:40 AM

OKAY. . . .problem temporarily fixed!

TFD (i havent tried LW but i assume its the same)

when you start your game....if it locks up on the joining screen....try hosting a game...when u host it use any map, dont think it matters. then exit the host game - DONT TURN OFF THE GAME OR ELSE U HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN.

when you exit the game that you have hosted, go to someone elses server, and then i should let you in...if your having the saem problem as me

i think its something with the OS - Microsoft Media Center 2005, but try what i said above and it should work!

Thanks to Hell-AoD-....who stumbled upon this "fix" while trying to get it to work.

Same Problems!

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-8-2005 at 10:49 AM

Guys i am having exactly same problem since i bought my new PC the other day! And i have the new OS XP Media edition!
Tried the temp fix just mentioned but did not work.
Think Nova need to help us here with a patch or something! Anyone know if this is being done or looked into?
Im not changing my OS for same reasons as the satellite tv and is a good OS.

We need help and fast!!!!!

perigrine falcon - 10-8-2005 at 05:09 PM

you guys have this problem on a laptop?

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-8-2005 at 08:45 PM

have a laptop - but not tried it. Not sure its powerful enough for DFLW thou the laptop is only a month old.?? But laptop only has XP on so I would not thought the OS would be the problem there - more the laptop being slow.

I would think this problem is a simple one and surely someone somewhere can sort?

Just that its beyond me!

If anyone has any ideas keep them coming. Think this may spiral as more people buy new computers with the New 2005 Media OS.

yeh the game is fine - hosting a game is no problem - its just trying to get online and joining another is where the problem seems to be??

Not true,,,,,, when you buy a computer, you choose the os, not the manufacturer, (unless you go w/a base model, or special). My comment was directed at that version of windows, yes i found it on the microsoft site, but there was little to no information about it. From what i gathered it was simply a big brain type of os meant for hooking to your tv, (which most motherboards do now anyway). As for burning dvd's, (hardware like burners are cheap now, and they come w/ the necessary info to load in the rig).

Shife - 10-16-2005 at 10:57 AM

Sorry didnt mean to offend if I did so. My point was is that I think that Media Center is Microsofts next evolution of Windows XP. Meaning that in the next few years you will probably have XP Prof. and XP Media Center as your two main OS. So software designer are gonna have to take this OS into account when setting up there products.....

DEADLOCK - 10-16-2005 at 11:58 PM

No offense taken. Doubtful on the microsoft using that version as a base platform. (they are coming out w/1 in 2007, forgot the name). Bassically, if a manufacturer picks up a deal in bulk from microsoft, like for 2000 operating system OEM versions, they jump at it, and simply advertise the system w/it till its gone. ie: they will run /advertise specials on tv till they are all out of that particular os. But, as a consumer you have a choice, it may cost more, or less to change it . Secondly, the average user does not use their computer for multimedia purpose, (short of what their monitor can run). It would take alot of ram to run all those processes, (something the manufacturer fails to mention in the add as well.) ie: if your hooked to a tele, and burning a movie, while gaming, or surfing the web.

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-20-2005 at 11:07 AM

okay - I have sorted my problem out - or should I say I now know what the problem is on my new PC with media edition!

After addind a new hard drive to the pc - putting normal Xp on it and being able to play DFLW with no sound - i then enabled my SOUNDCARD!!! and had exactly the same problem as with media edition in the other hard drive!

So i then went back in to Media Edition - DISABLED my SOUNDCARD and hey bloody presto - I got online no prblem!!

So question is - do you have same or similar soundcard!! Mine is a REALTEK make and is a High Defintion Audio one (came in a Packard Bell Desktop). I never had problems with my old soundblaster card but for reasons that are beyond me - as soon as i enable it again i cant get online! I disable it and can!

I tried enabling it whilst online in a game but the sound did not work (so you can play without sound (yeh who would want to!!!)) the sound only works if enabled before you fire up DFLW.

So - dilema again but least I know what the problem is! I have emailed nova support to see if there is a PATCH or if they can help.

Any guys out there know if I can tweak the soundcard or if there is a patch? Ifnot - will replace with my old soundcard if I can.

Fingers crossed on the nova reply!

(Sorry microsoft!!!!)

Shife - 10-22-2005 at 05:39 PM

Very interesting I too have the Realtek High Def.....Finally some progress in this matter.:D

DEADLOCK - 10-23-2005 at 12:48 AM

If these are newer computers, it would be safer to call their tech support division. (its not novas issue that the audio cards are not being recognized) . It may be the cards are bad themselves, or need a serious driver update. Use your device manager and make sure the correct card is enabled.

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-23-2005 at 01:35 AM

I agree it is not a nova problem - thou they may still be able to help with patches etc. I def know that the issue is now the realtek sound card and I the device is working properly and has updated driver.
Im suspecting now that it mya be the software (ie the actual driver) or maybe the capture device that comes with the soundcard for recording the freeview/sat tv. (This is just a guess thou)
I have tried to download a basic driver for the soundcard (not sure its a soundcard even - think it is in built to mother board (need to check!)) - like basic ac90 sound - but having probs doing that. My thinking was just put on a basic driver and see if Nova loads.

Shife - any luck?

Think we know the problem now!

Phooey

Shife - 10-23-2005 at 03:46 PM

As far as I know mine is integrated. Also I have no slots left since my orig. vid card was also integrated. So unless Nova comes up with a patch then looks like I'm stuck. Ive tried my tech support at Sony from the beginning and they didnt even get this far....So thats how much they know lol.

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-24-2005 at 02:37 AM

Yep - fingers crossed re Nova! I will email Realtek but doubt they will bother but worth a shot.

VKSheridan - 10-24-2005 at 04:13 AM

I just got done doing a set-up using an ASUS P5WD2 motherboard with an integrated RealTek HD chip. I had the same problem described here and after countless hours of trying different configurations with the video card, IRQ's, etc., I was dumbfounded when I read everyone else having the same problem with a common thread back to the RealTek sound adapter. I killed the sound card and got the same results, everything worked fine, including sound from the USB headset. I went to RealTek and downloaded the most recent drivers that were uploaded 10/21/05, hoping they had addressed this and no change. I did every imaginable adjustment to the sound card settings, hoping there was silly config. killing the game and no change. I'm going to kill the card, remove the drivers and replace it with a Creative Labs Soundblaster and move on.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to everyone who posted in this forum and for sharing your findings. I assure you, nobody would even think of blaming a soundcard for a DFLW "Join Session" freeze.....

Good job folks!
VK "Who Would Have Thought" Sheridan

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-24-2005 at 05:26 AM

Sheridan - my thoughts exactly - gonna take my Soundblaster card from my old PC. Just hope it doesnt mess with the Satelite TV capture software on media OS.

Hope Realtek will sort this problem out..I havent emailed them as I doubt they will bother replying - thou if anyone does get a reply - please post.

VKSheridan - 10-24-2005 at 05:52 AM

Welpers, I installed the Soundblaster card & drivers and killed the RealTek card and its drivers and the game is on! Solid fix folks!

Thanks again all,
VKSheridan

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-26-2005 at 07:17 PM

Sheridan - was your Realtek a proper removable soundcard or an inboard built in on the motherboard? Only asking as havng a few problems putting on my soundblaster card as the realtek on mine is a built in one. Tried disabling from device manager but PC does not like it and boot up is not working properly. Any ideas?

Eagle_Eye - 10-26-2005 at 10:48 PM

You should disable the onboard sound from the bios..not disable from within windows..

EE

KK HK PhOoEy - 10-27-2005 at 02:28 AM

ok - yout talking to a newb when you say bios - how do i do that? I can get in to the set up screen at the beginning before windows sets uo - do i then deactivate from there? Will it stick out as a soundcard/device?

sorry - did say i was a newb at this!

VKSheridan - 10-31-2005 at 01:41 PM

The RealTek device is part of the motherboard so I disabled it in the BIOS. If you hold a key down like the spacebar, it will slow down the boot process to let you get into the BIOS. Once there, disable the onboard soundcard. I think you can disable the device in Windows but it is better to do that at the BIOS level so it doesn't even fire up. Go to your PC manufacturers site to learn of the BIOS settings before messing with it though as one bad configuration can be a bad day!

Good luck,
VKSheridan

ive tried everything including this

Hote - 11-2-2005 at 12:20 AM

i cant get delta force 2 to work either

in my research on this problem i have found that our older delta force favourites aren't the only applications having realtek problems. there are plenty other applications and few fixes

so i gave realtek 1 last chance and emailed the following letter..(cross your fingers)

Date: Tue, 1 Nov 2005 09:41:14 -0500 (EST)
From: xxxx
Subject: realtek ALC860
To: pctech@realtek.com.tw

directx version DirectX 9.0c

Audio Codec ALC860

this soundcard is causing problems in many programs..it has rendered some of my favourite programs useless. there are too many problems to mention but I'll attach a link to one in particular. i have tried everything and the main consensus seems to be to get rid of realtek "junk" and never buy from them again. i am writing to give u a chance to fix your product before i follow suit.

xxxx = my real information i did not include in this reply.

good luck to all..i feel cheated ..how about you ?

KK HK PhOoEy - 11-8-2005 at 06:51 AM

well even thou i didnt want to I have disabled realtek HD from the bios and installed my soundblaster card.

Everything works now as it should so it is quite clear REALTEK is the problem. If they dont answer with some form of solution - suggest you boycott any product with it in. They lose out the end of the day and word will get round.
It makes you wonder what else it is the root problem for out there! I just stumbled on it by chance by playing with two seperate hard drives.
Oh well... DFLW looks as good as ever!! Welcome back Dune City!. Yaaaay!

Hi,

Thank you for your help .
We found VON setting . If I entered the VON setting item, system will freeze .
The Microsoft UAA Audio driver will freeze too !
Because this game maybe not run in multi-streaming mode/Multi-audio devie , even Vista ( LH ) OS .
HD Audio system is different from AC'97 Audio system .
The HD Audio architecture is defined by Microsoft and Intel .
We are following HD Audio system ( Azalia ) specification .
So, the Older game maybe not compatible with HD Audio system .
We want to contact game manufacturer to check this problem .

GrimReaper^RU^ - 12-9-2005 at 09:28 AM

I'm having the same problem with DF2. I've emailed novalogic to ask how i can dissable VON while not in the game. Just like Land Warrior, when i click on the VON settings tab, the game freezes. =/

Anyway, I'm glad we know the cause now, I've been trying like mad to get the game to work!

I'll keep you posted on what novalogic have to say. ;)

GrimReaper^RU^ - 12-12-2005 at 01:57 AM

Novalogic's support hasn't been helpful at all... After i explained the situation, they simply said to dissable the VON keys in keyboard settings, which doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. To be honest, i don't really think they care.

I've got df2 working when my sound is dissabled in the task manager, but since i use the sound to locate enemies, this has kinda spoilt the game.

A freind of mine said he found an nvidia sound driver that worked, so i'm looking into that right now, but until then, i guess i'll just have to keep turning the sound off :(

Any news from realtek?

Hote - 12-12-2005 at 11:05 AM

no news...i have since sent them 2 emails asking for further update but no reply. i hope they not gonna try to sweep this under the rug because there are many other applications with this problem and i will look them all up from every help forum i can find them on and protest against the device and company. i'm sure there have been many people just in these forums alone that have opted for a different sound system with their new computer..wouldnt u if u knew then what u know now ?

Yep... having a bug in the hardware/drivers is one thing, but trying to ignor the problems of paying customers really gets to me...

Perhaps send a few emails to asus and msi tellin them to stop integrating realtek into their boards. :P

well they did get dflw and look at the problem so i not gonna jump all over them just yet..i'll give them a bit more time to straighten this out

GrimReaper^RU^ - 12-13-2005 at 09:15 AM

Yeah, it's good that they did at least go to the effort of looking into the problem.

bad news:

Hi,

I'm sorry for reply too late .

At the time of development of this game, the same realtek sound options

the software is an older game that is already out of its

I'm sorry for this is very older game . NovaLogic have no resolution to this issue .
We can't change High Definition Audio architecture that define by Microsoft .
Because this audio system will meet Microsoft OS requirement in the future .
We have tried Microsoft High Definition Audio Standard driver , and it freeze too !

so there u have it..it looks like neither company will fix this for us.. this is bad for realtek because they have a product that is incompatible...they seem to say they cant make it compatible and that is not acceptable..i suggest we stay away from real tek..i will email them back and leave no doubt as to how disappointed i am in them.
but for us that dont want to go out and buy another sound system the only thing we can do is come up with patches for each application that freezes..for us i think a simple patch that eliminates Von from our delta force games would be all we need..unfortunately i am not a programmer so it is out of my hands
any patch makers out there want to give this a go ? ...

furthermore i think a sticky and a note in the dfbarracks news would be in order here to all that still love their older (pre bhd) df titles that "if u buy a computer with real tek hd sound u will no longer be able to play these games online with sound"

i would appreciate any updates of a user made patch to eliminate all von from these older games

well guys i have now taken this as far as i can and i am sorry that i havent be able to offer a solution..
i re-iterate that i will let realtek know that i think their answer is unacceptable. because it is their product that is not compattable with older tech. at some point i may have to persue a refund through litigation but that is no help for us now

a fix !!! :)

Hote - 12-23-2005 at 05:14 PM

The fix: Go to Control Panel - Sound - Audio - Advanced - Performance - then turn Hardware Acceleration down all the way to the left..

sombody stumbled onto this..i tried it and it worked for me :)

GrimReaper^RU^ - 12-24-2005 at 09:28 AM

I second that! Works fine now! :D

Shife - 1-8-2006 at 03:11 AM

Well i gave it a try and had the same effect still froze at join....Once again thanks for all the posts and help guys!

Wilderness38 - 10-3-2006 at 04:27 AM

Thanks for the info guys.

I may try a nvidia sound driver like someone mentioned. Another thing I'm giong to try is to open DFLW in a decompiler and find the Von code and try to dissable or remove it.

If it works I'll try to make a patch. I dont know too much about coding though so it would be so helpfull if someone could beat me to this and make a patch.

hey fellas..Welp I was hoping for the miracle after finding this thread, I too have the same problem. IM glad we somehow found the root cause..screw Realtek, what a joke. Well, I tried the control panel-sound-advanced yadda yadd...still hangs up at joining session. How annoying, and when i click on VON in the options it freezes as well, I believe others had this same prob. Welp any luck from anyone lately, a patch?? anything?? IM jonesing...won the game 6 times now, lol...thanks for your help, i was going loco.
