co-op helo tip

Xx_jet_xX - 8-26-2004 at 06:17 PM

Murphy brought this to my attention on a map i recently uploaded to the dflw map database. When you have a helo insertion on a co-op map its a long walk from your respawn if you get shot. So i made the helo go back to where it started from. This is what the events look like:
event 1
group 1 is within area 1

redirect group 3 to waypoint list 2
set group 3 to 30 kph
reset after (seconds) 15

event 2
group 3 is within area 2

redirect group 3 to waypoint list 3
set group 3 to 30 kph
reset (seconds) 30
delay (seconds) 15

The first area trigger is where the helo is at originaly. and the second is where the helo lands at your insertion point. group 3 is the helo, waypoint list 2 is the one that goes to the insertion point. and waypoint 3 is the waypoint that brings the helo back to where it started.
If you start out in the helo then you need to line up the last 2 waypoints (list 3)with the helo and put the last one right at the nose of the helo. I found it works best if the helo is going 25 kph.

the same will work for trucks or zodiacs.
Hope that gives some ideas. :P

that gave me an idea straight away;)
Would you have to put a wait timer thing so that the helo dosent fly off as soon as it comes back to pick you up?

not if youre outside the area trigger, put something to mark where the trigger is at so you know your standing outside of it.
and have the respawns outside of the trigger too. the helo has about a one second delay on its own. so if you plan on loading more than one person you might want a couple more seconds.

ok sounds good. You can do this helo trick with ais, can you not? I made maps where the ai leap out of the helo or attempt to get in, but half the time they get stuck or run off somehwhere else.

getting an ai out of a helo is easy but ive never had much luck getting them in one. yeah itl work with ai's just add their group to the first event.

The map i posted today called Desert Dogs has these events except i did it a little differently. The helo slows down and goes low enough for you too jump off of it before it returns to base. To do that dont delay the second event and make sure theres a hill or something in front of the door. Otherwise you fall down and go boom! lol and add another event after the helo moves out of the insertion to speed up. and one before insertion to slow it down.

Enjoy!

hmmm. I find it strange for the helo to blow up for no reason. I made this map ages ago (played it last night) where your in a helo going up stream (its the grass map 10 i think) and you gun down some bg patrols, but you come to this bridge with a couple of RPGs and some gunmen. Cut em down. Then you fly off again, destroy a small outpost and some more bgs before you land at the LZ where a squad of 12 are awaiting you. Each have different weapons (snipers, gunners, riflemen) and then you begin to move into position that is watching over a columbian encampment. But you have to get by some patrols before then. Once you reach overwatch, the biggest battle breaks out. Only 3 of my teammates survived, two riflemen and a sniper!:o its like one of my fave missions ive made.
and i hope to make more good ones)

I think thats the way its designed. so you cant rely on the helo to kill all your enemies for you. maybe Eagle Eye could explain the helos behavior settings since hes been working on stuff like that.

That sounds like a good map, is it in the map database?

unfortuanatly, the map isnt in the databse. I'd like it to be there, I'll try all i can to get it here. But my pc at home hasnt got internet, and it will be a while before it does. Maybe I could get it on disc and send it via a friends computer?
also, your teamates in that mission have their own waypoints, so no bunching up and everything:D

The computer i make maps on doesnt have internet either i just throw it on a floppy and upload from the computer that does. so i can relate to your aggravation!

hmmm...thats interesting. I thought that cos my DFmaps were so BIG that they wouldnt be able to be uploaded onto a floppy!

I put the bms, mis, screenshot and a readme in a zip file and lately ive been doing multiple versions of my maps, one as a single player and anther as a co-op or a harder version lol. so thats 2, mis 2 bms, a screenshot, and a readme. if its zipped it doesnt realy take up that much room. ofcourse when i make my screenshot i use paintshop pro 7 and save with the export jpeg feature. all in all the largest zip file ive had is 250 kb and the max for the database is 300 kb. and thats not much space on a 1.44 mb floppy
