Could anybody programm this useful little tool?

Mopic - 2-18-2004 at 09:39 PM

I'm a BHD map builder and i'm missing a tool, that would be very useful for finding maps on novaworld.
Is there anybody out there, who is able to write a small programm, that always runs in background and checks in regular intervals (lets say every 5, 10 or 20 min), if a map name is hostet somewhere on novaworld?

Just like the pinger tool, but checking automatically and just checking but nothing else. Just a tiny tool.

U enter a bundle of mapnames, u would like to keep an eye on and the tool looks out, if one of these maps is hostet and if it is, then giving u an announcement, on whitch host it runs, so u can decide to join it via pinger and check your map with real fighting on it.

This would be a very useful tool for all of us map makers. So we no longer would have to give our maps to the community and hope, somewhen, somewhere, maybe eventually see our maps hostet in the pinger. That's frustrating.

Another benefit would be the possibility for any player to look out for his favorite maps.

I wished someone would make this...can't be so very much work.

Regards,
Mopic

PS: Maybe such a tool exists or there is a possibility in pinger to do this, i would be glad, if u would give me an advice about it..
Thank you.

...there's a GOOD idea.

Any takers?

HumanTarget - 2-19-2004 at 10:56 AM

maybe email the guys that make pinger and see if they want to put it in the next revision.

DeadBolt - 2-19-2004 at 11:24 AM

Heard of this before and I think they did up some php script for it. Been far to long to remember.

I would suggest you head over here for tool requests. Most of the 3rd party tool makers are there.

If theres any 1 who could its some 1 by the name of
Fwo Raven
Or maby ask jj from dfr in df2 if you get to see her

But i personaly think that such a program would eventualy lead to high ping times.

But then again You never know till u find out

Steptoe - 2-22-2004 at 05:55 AM

dflw.2ya.com if u realy knew your way around the Df community,u would know Mopic is being very pro active and talking to the people (not person) he should be, and can help him.
Man u realy spam DFB dont u

Hm...

Mopic - 2-23-2004 at 04:18 AM

@HumanTarget
Well, i posted this on pinger forum, but Dstructr, who is the maker of the pinger tool said, he isn't interested in such a tool..
hm...seems like thats not the way...

@DeadBolt
I posted it where you said, and they said, they would like such a tool, but until now nobody could give a really constructiv hint.

@dflw.2ya.com
FWORaven is a good hint. I'll e-mail him.
About jj, i don't know her. If you know her personally, maybe u tell her about this thread. I searched her in DFB, but didn't find her.
About the ping-problem:
I know, the big amount of checkings could really be a problem to the servers...but as you said, you never know, till you testet it.
;)

At the end, it seems not to be sooo easy...but i'm sure, someone will give it a try....this thread is online since just 4 days...read by 70 people...and there are hundreds out there...keep on searching.....
waiting for the man...

PS: I'll let you know, what FWORaven says about this nice little tool..let's see...

DeadBolt - 2-23-2004 at 11:54 PM

Yep, didn't figure you would get anything immediate. But at least the idea is there for reference. Keep hunting for someone to do it or take a run at it yourself.

btw, there wouldn't be a ping/lag issue since you can only get that info from the NL pages, not from a server ping. I did take a peek and the map name isn't reported but the Mission Name is there. Is that what you are talking about?

Mopic - 2-24-2004 at 01:51 AM

Yeah DeatBolt, seems we got the same idea.
Talking about this with a mate a little earlier, he and i came to the same idea to use the NL-Server list for some HTTP-generated mapchecking tool.
This could be a solution.

If you take a look at the code of this NL-server-list, you find a variable named "Mission Name" and i think thats it...

Sadly i'm not skilled enough, to work something like this out in HTML-code. So next question: Who knows, how this could be done?
:)

DeadBolt - 2-24-2004 at 05:02 AM

Yeah, that is the mission name I mentioned. If you take a look at bhd joiner it saves the server list as an xml file with all the fields there. If you check the forum I pointed you to you will find the code used to decode and parse the server list (delphi, search the forum for unitnovaglb).

Mopic - 2-24-2004 at 09:38 AM

wow, these threads on chancellors are really heavy...didn't understand anything....:(
But i'll think about it (or someone else does..;))
Thank you for now, DeadBolt. I think this way will be the right one...let's see, what happens next, i got a feeling, that this little useful tool could really become true...

Have to sleep now, later more...

Ok guys...
i really tried it, to make such a tool by myself with delphi7, but it doesn't work...well i'm not a coder...it's not my thing...

i tried to make it as simple as possible, but couldn't manage it.

So i ask again...is there anybody out there, to make it?

What i think, it would need is the following:

1. On opening the user enters a list of mapnames he is looking for (or the tool loads the list from a former save)
2. After this the user starts the check-modus
3. The programm (minimizes to systray?) and starts to check the content of the .glb in regular intervalls and compares it with the map-list
4. Is one of the mapnames in the glb, the programm plays a sound.
5. The user opens the pinger tool and takes a look, which of the maps is hosted.

I think, this is the simplest way to make it. Not a luxurios thing, but should do its job. Maybe it would be useful to make it possible to check the glb for playernames or parts of map- or playernames and to implement an option to set the time for the check-intervall.

I really tried to make it, but i never did any programming and i don't intend to. For me it would be disproportional to learn deep skills in programming just to realize something, of which i'm shure some others would need a day or two for. So i ask again....could anyone code this little tool?
