tips on 56k

syphon - 7-25-2003 at 05:43 PM

just thought it would be a good idea to maybe get together a list of tips to use on bhd if ur on a 56k line. if u have any tips then just post them here to put together a list for people with 56k line who r having trouble with the high ping. No tips to get a faster connection though!

1) Avoid close quarters. If you end up right up close and personal with someone and you are on a 56k you will have no clue about where they mgiht actually be if they aremoving in every direction to try and slit you open.

2) Use plenty of claymores. Mine the area with clays and then enemys run itno them and you get a kill without having to worry about what your ping is to decide where to shoot.

3. Grenades and rockets. You can fire these at the enemy and you wont have to worry about exactly where they mgiht be as the blast radius should be enough to take your enemy down.

If you have more tips post them here.

Well, it's really for the serving PC, but you can do it as well, open windows explorer, go to your BHD install directory, find the file dfv.cfg and open it in notepad, scroll down to the multiplayer settings until you find domaxpingcheck and change the value from 1 to 0, then save the file.

do wat eagle_eye told me
thats if you know the host!!

56k is a luxuory.
I have 28.8k and still play.

Dont go over 800x600 screen res, it appears to have a degrading effect on your ping.

Read the read me file in the bhd folder. Nova ping IS NOT a icmp ping, it also rates to machine lag etc etc.....
They shouldnt have created the 'NOVA PING' its caused so much missconception

Nova Ping is a weird, stupid @*& thing that they thought was really cool.. and turns out no other games use such an item.. everything else is icmp ping...

perko - 7-26-2003 at 04:48 PM

would't they take a hint with all the problems and stuff like that from ppl emailing them and saying "TAKE THAT F**KING THING OUT!!!"
thats wat id say:cool:

Steptoe - 7-26-2003 at 04:54 PM

yeh the player 'ping whats on the server is very diff to what they have on their screen, and thats diff to what they see other players as.
I was running icmp ping to players from server and that had no relationship to the nova ping.
At the end of the day i recon if a player turns his settings up to high and /or has music playing, and or progs in background or anything to cause a bit of machine lag at their end they could end up getting punted due to high nova ping.
Its competely stupid and dumb.....

i no that the pings r different to wat i see on the screen cos my screen says i hae a ping of like 700 which i no is complete rubbish. but pings r still greatly higher than that of someone on a cable connection, etc.

Wrong....read my previous posts, we /the squad have done a lot of playing with this from way back when the 1st demo came out.
the guys run 56k, cable , dsl, all at diff speeds and me with less than 1 ms icmp ping on 100meg connection, with a reasonable high end dedicated gaming machine. The server says I have a 180 to 250 nl ping!!!, the dsl client couple miles away runs at 320 to 420 (icmp ping of 70) while a 56ker a 1000 kms away sits at the same and icmp ping of 95 ms, then theres the cable connection 3500 km away across the Tasman sea, icmp ping of
115 and nl ping 350 to 550. Then theres the 56ker not far from him icmp of 100 and same nl.
etc etc, varies from night to night and the above nl pingis not consistant from night but icmp pings are close from nigh to night

Other tips

Hi,
Other things like don't download things at the same time ;) (Obv. I know...)

And things like IM (MSN etc), sign out of them.

Find servers that are not too full and lower pings (So you can increase them :P)

All I can think of now

56k doesnt lag a server, the player with 56k may find a delay with other players or others may find him a little harder to kill. but play between those with a good connection to the server is not effected.
Even those with bb can lag due to a bad connection...to many hops, dropped packets and even a bad ping...icmp ping that is.
When playing on a ded server with a 100 meg connection and less than 1ms ping, one finds it difficult to adjust between lead times between players if there is a great diff in there connections...espec sniping runners.
The idea that 56kers lag a server is another missconception that just will not bloody die and so many ppl have a go at them for there own bad connections.
I have even been in the odd server, where the server has had a go at the 56kers blaming them 4 lag. If one is to server one should know what they are about, not run a play/serve server then blame 56kers.
Theres a big diff between a ded server and a play/server
So chins up all u 56kers, u get blamed for a lot of crap that u dont deserve, ok u r sometimes hard to kill and visa versa, but when I hit a States side server at 250 to 350 icmp ping so am I (that can be a 280 to nearly 500 NL ping that means crap as stated in previous posts)

BladeUSI - 7-29-2003 at 12:29 PM

Never said BB couldnt lag...Well aware of that.56K is more prone to lag a server...I will be looking for a write up on this i read once

BladeUSI - 7-29-2003 at 12:39 PM

I will tell you one thing to help out major..Turn off all messengers ICQ,MSN,Yahoo,AOL...they will cause you to lag in the server (Proven)

Steptoe - 7-29-2003 at 02:09 PM

There seems to be a bit of confusion on game lag.
Theres 3 areas.
1/ is connection, icmp ping, dropped paclets of info etc
2/client machine/video lag,,, video settings too high for card/cpu/ram,game music on, progs in background virus scanners maint progs etc and a generally messy machine.
3/The server,
3a A player server that has to process the player info/video and the server with everyone elses input to, including 2/
3b/ Ded where not enough ram, cpu requirements, and quality of compents. and 1/ and 2/
In all the yrs of servering, I would hate to count the # of ppl who have called our server laggy only to find when a trace route is made to them they have a bad connection, and or 2/

RE BladeUSI's post
"my tip is get broadband..56k is lagging the servers.."

I would, but I can't! :(
In this village, not enough people want it... Shouldn't be too long 'til we get it.. Hopefully :)
